      Sadly it’s the last thing to go.
      When it comes to irrational beliefs reason has no hold.
      Just look at all the poor TDS sufferers who have been presented with overwhelming proof they have been/are/ continue to be lied to by their preferred “news media” and still refuse to cede that DJT is not the Devil incarnate they want him to be.

    I wonder if that is a Grumman F4F Wildcat, or a Grumman F6F Hellcat that splashed yet another Zero in the Jap Skye.
    Rinse, spit, and repeat it seems. It stays weird.

        Magnificent Machine! It was pretty much the Navy’s answer to the P-47 Thunderbolt, but without the Turbocharger. Still, the F6F-6 (never entered production) with a 4 bladed prop and an improved mechanical supercharger, was still capable of 417 mph.

    That was a F6F-4 Hellcat. the bubble canopy and the round stabilizer are the give-a-ways. Skye got off easy. Most Zeros blew up due to a light frame,concentrated 50 caliber fire and no self sealing gas tanks.

    Absolutely correct Lucius….both magnificent aircraft. But the Chance/Vought F4U Corsair, aka “Whistling Death” to the Japs with that monstrous P&W 2800 Double Wasp engine, the largest engine available at the time, swinging that 13.12ft (4M) 4 blade prop belongs right up there with ’em.

    While “Hellcat” fits Sam quite well, figuratively as well as literally……I think she’d look seriously hot in a Corsair. 😛 *Drooling slightly*

      The US Navy’s nickname for the Corsair was “Ensign Eater”. A old friend used to fly one in WWII and he said that the Corsair killed a lot of ‘hot shot’ pilots who found out the hard way that it was far more capable than they were.

    F4F Wildcat or F6F Hellcat? In most respects the F6F looked like a scaled-up F4F, but it was easy to distinguish them by looking at the wing position on the fuselage. On the F4F it was just below center, and on the F6F it was right across the bottom – this is in-between. A Zero pilot that survived the war would have known the difference immediately, because he could outrun an F4F. But I don’t expect detailed accuracy in an allegorical drawing.

    Another difference is that the F6F cowling was considerably longer, but this is at an angle where I can’t tell.

    Trying to exactly identify a cartoon aircraft can be difficult. Allegory within a cartoon is admissible for the story behind it. Brilliantly done, Chris.

      The problem extends into RL. I have a book on tanks created by Tom Clancy that gave me a moment of cringe by misidentifying an M48 A5 as an M60. Clancy was known for his research but we have to face the fact that there are just too many variants, especially post WWII, for mortals to keep track of.

        For real confusing fun, check out a Nationalist Chinese CM-11 Brave Tiger;

        https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/88/CM-11_Tank_before_Testing_Demo_20130302b.jpg

        It’s basically an M48A2 turret with a new M68 105mm gun on an ex- U.S. Army M60A2 “Starship” hull. In the process of using up old turrets from their own M48s and almost-new M60 hulls from the U.S. minus the classified electronics in the kludgy Starship turret, the Taiwan Army basically re-created the original M60.

        cheers

    Coronavirus COVID19 a SARS-Cov2 is a novel version an doesn’t care about politics and does not differentiate. The corporate owned press has never been liberal and generally catered to the Republicans over Democrats. The “president” said it was a “hoax” and a “Chinese trick”. It is very real. Our “president” made sure we would have no ready means for fighting such a thing by removing both teams set up by Obama to fight such epidemics & pandemics. (Where the Libertarian market based ideal fails. Why govt is necessary.) Now he wants to stop the self quarantines before we have won against the virus by Easter. What kind of psychotic mass murderer would want that? Our “president” who wants to be dictator of course and his red hat MAGA cult 4-square behind him. It weakens us our security by following his directives.
