Trump: I’m cancelling the military transport for your House Democrat junket.
Liberals: Trump is such a hypocrite! He did this to retaliate against Pelosi and blamed the shutdown while the administration is still going to the World Economic Summit!
Trump: Oh, and due to the shutdown we’re not going to Davos.
Liberals: Why would Trump deny American representation at such an important event?! Did the Russians make him do it?

Paul S;
You’re generally correct. The original designation was .36, but bore spec was always .355-.357″.
The “.38” designation was instituted by Colt and Remington in 1866-67, when conversions of percussion .36 revolvers to metallic cartridge were made for the U.S. Army and Navy. The idea being to let military storeskeepers easily distinguish between paper or skin cartridges for the percussion revolvers and rimfire or later centerfire metallic cartridges for the converted (and later new-production) breechloading types.
Similarly, when Winchester introduced the .44 Winchester Centerfire cartridge with the model 1873 rifle in 1873, it was also known as the .44-40 (.44 caliber, 40 grain blackpwder load) to avoid confusion with the earlier .44 Henry rimfire cartridge used in the Civil War Henry and Winchester Model 1866 lever-actions. The two cartridges are not interchangeable, and loading one into the wrong weapon doesn’t work at all.
Most such designations were made for that exact purpose- to prevent confusion. and generally, it worked.
