    That is a good question and there are a few good answers, most of which bear no likeness to the functions of it we are seeing today.

    However, it was my impression that the individual involved is a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, though I do not know the veracity and details.

      I read the same thing – plus being arrested for impersonating a police officer… Makes me wonder – why would he go out for public exposure with a background like that?

        The conspiracy reason would be that he was a plant and an excuse for all of the banks and paypal and platforms to use to ban them thus effecting all patriot groups, nationalist groups (not liked), right wing groups, gun clubs (sometime), and other allegedly nefarious people the leftoids hate.
        Just a simple false flag operation either by payment or going in and worm-tounging them as some did to other good thinking people.
        The left, the FBI, the Democrats, the globalists are now all appraised of the various ways to false flag.
        People who used to work for Killary’s, oops, Hillary’s election, later staged “right wing” patriot type events at which the police and others were ordered to act in ways that would almost ensure violence.

      I wonder if there was some kind of physical barrier, a clear demarcation, perhaps even a WALL, would it help make it clear to Mexican soldiers where they should be patrolling or not…

      That being said, I thought the Mexican cartels ran the border, not the Mexican Army?

        The cartels own the Mexican army, and police, so it amounts to the same thing.

        Among the various reasons for “Operation Fast & Furious” at BATFET was to use the “running” of guns to the cartels to cover up the fact that guns given to the Mexican police by the one’s crowd as “law enforcement assistance” were mostly being delivered by the place to the cartels, often without even being removed from the shipping boxes.

        It was a misunderstanding. The Americans were south of the barrier, but north of the border, which in that particular location is not clearly marked. Once the truth was known to all, the Mexicans returned the Americans’ guns, apologized, and went home.
        No need to start a shooting war.

        The border in many places has shifted around the river over time and the ability to efficiently wall it and demarcate it does not exist.
        They better get along.
        It is other situations where the situation is not innocent that could be a problem. Those bad situations have occurred in the past.
        We need overall plans to win the war.
        I still suggest deporting every child of parents not subject to the jurisdiction of the USA. Maybe allowing for a few percent to stay after screening.
        No reward for illegal acts in coming to the USA should be allowed to be rewarded. the laws are on the books and US Supreme Court decisions. It is the major part of what got our current President elected.

    The majority of people voluntarily comply with reasonable laws and are satisfied to leave enforcement of laws to the police and the courts… but that is starting to change… and not in a good way…

    There’s been a broad-based powerful & sustained effort over the past five decades (or longer) to undermine cops.

    When was the last time you saw a tv show, movie or any representations where police were shown to be anything other than dullards, corrupt, racist or a combination thereof? Yet if you check the facts, nothing is further from the truth.

    Police put together an airtight case and the judge throws it out because someone cries “racism!” and the judge wants to play activist. The media paints the situation as an innocent individual being falsely accused by corrupt racist cops. Who cares about the victims? Who cares about the future victims of someone who walks away from the court laughing?

    Add to that a government who are all too eager to throw cops under the bus rather than risk having to deal with an outrage mob of leftist assholes…

    Are there a few bad apples? Absolutely… cops are human too… but the vast majority are good men & women who walk the line while regular folks cower behind cover.

    You couldn’t pay me enough to be a cop nowadays… yet some patriots still put on the badge and strap on the gun…

        @Redleg, I’m not so sure The Rookie is a “positive spin” for a conservative, or someone invested in freedom, or a gun nut, or a lot of other things. Although I generally find the show enjoyable to watch for the characters, I find myself yelling at the computer frequently when they do stupid crap with guns, or when they told the cartoon vigilantes “let the professionals handle this”, or they’re grossly violating safety or procedure or civil rights.

    Hopkins, 69, also known as Johnny Horton, was arrested in Sunland Park, New Mexico, on a federal complaint charging him with being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.

    A felon with guns and ammo, who is also a patriot. Not quite as advertised.

    “Ex-felon with firearm” is seldom charged Federally–IME it is always a State charge handled in State courts. El Federales are embarrassed and humiliated, and this poor jerk is going to pay full price+ for putting this whoopee cushion on the King’s throne. Charged Federally, this guy is looking at 5 years in Federal Prison and $10K fine, and Fed time means 85% of the sentenced time prior to release. There can be “Upward and downward departures” on this sentence, at the discretion of the Court.

    As for the Mexican Army personnel jacking up our troops, some combination of f–ked up ROEs and/or extreme patience and courage by our troops explain this occurrence. Mexican Army acting as an adjunct to cartel shipment efforts should surprise no one, and I think an adjustment in ROEs on the border is long overdue–basically, if uniformed 16-17 year old soldiers step onto our soil with H&K G-3 rifles, expect them to be returned in a body bag. Rumpkins with AK-47s or M1 Carbines get strafed off if they pose a threat to U.S. or local personnel. If Mexico and the cartels want a war, things will go poorly quickly for the other side. The border has been a clusterf–k since the days of Pancho Villa. It is time to re-regulate matters in that vicinity.

      For decades now, when the proggies call for more “gun control”, the NRA and others have pointed out we need enforcing of current law. This included frequently noting how local prosecutors won’t involve Federal prosecutors to send away felons with guns on federal charges. I have long supported that.

      Hopkins is allegedly a felon with a gun. I ain’t no hypocrite liberal, I’ll just note that out of fairness this should be done a lot more often no matter who the felon is.

        One of the problems in a society of humans is that the people we need to stand up with are often not the sort of people we want to stand up with.

        And what jurisdiction – Constitutionally speaking – do the feds have to ban firearm possession by a felon? Maybe buying a firearm across state lines (entailing the felon actually having it shipped across state lines, NOT simply buying one in a local store that came from elsewhere). Maybe he was on federal land? The feds have way too many laws on their books that aren’t supposed to reside at that level.

        See here. 1968 Gun Control Act bans felon possession of guns as well as for those convicted of “misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.”

        However, as seen here, the states can determine to restore all or partial gun rights.

    As Kadaka pointed out, Hopkins is allegedly a ‘felon in possession of a firearm’. Wonder what the odds are that this is a totally bullshit, made-up charge to justify their actions and vilify Hopkins so he doesn’t look like a sympathetic victim of FBI overreach/corruption?

    Not saying, just asking. And given the level of bullshittery the FBI was up to these past 2 1/2 years over Trump, you really have to wonder.

    You see, I well remember “Ranch Rescue”, a quasi-militia group of volunteers bringing their own weapons/equipment and being hired by border ranchers to protect their land from the coyotes and drug mules constantly coming through their property. Quite a few of them had bullet pock-marks and holes in their homes from these POS’s actually shooting at them (the land owners) and the govt threatening them with prosecution/imprisonment if they returned fire.

    WTF????? These assholes are on OUR SOIL, on PRIVATE PROPERTY, shooting at US CITIZENS and we’re being told that WE’LL be prosecuted if we defend ourselves by returning fire??????

    What pissed me off the worst was that this was during the Bush administration and the govt came down on R-R so hard they finally disbanded.

    So damn right…..Trump needs to CHANGE THE ROE’s and unleash/unshackle both the Border Patrol as well as the land owners. And as cold as this may sound, I’ve got no real problem if a few 15-16yo’s get sent back to Mexico in body bags when they shoot at our people, LE/BP or civilian. WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO DEFEND OURSELVES, OUR PROPERTY AND OUR COUNTRY.

    I’m going to disagree there, Chris.
    They arrested a citizen for doing his job.

    Remember that the gov’t in our nation is granted power and authority by the people. The laws are ours to enforce – we simply hire people to do full time what it is the citizen’s responsibility to do, anyway.

    Anytime someone says crap like “leave that to the professionals”* or that folks are “vigilantes” or “taking the law into their own hands” remind them that The government’s power derives from ours, not the other way around!

    That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed

    (IMO, the problem with vigilantes is not that they are enforcing the law, but that they can easily slip into a mob mentality, and enact sentencing on an accused without the rights afforded by our Constitution and common law. Of course, our professionals in the various police agencies would never have a problem with violating our rights, ’cause they’re from the government, right? Right?)

      I’ve seen groups who do a proper job, they keep watch at the border and call in a report to Border Patrol with the info needed to round up the illegal crossers.

      Overnight I saw footage of these yahoos with their official-looking fake badges, telling groups of illegals they were Border Patrol, and forcibly detaining the groups. What’s the difference between that and pulling over a truckload of brown-skinned people on a freeway they think are suspicious?

      If I’m hiking with my family along a wilderness trail, and some random guys suddenly pop up with shiny badges saying they’re taking us into custody and demanding we surrender, I would likely risk those poor benighted fools bleeding out before help could arrive rather than hope they really aren’t going to hurt us. And hey, it’s Earth Day, support the original all-natural recycling and composting methods.

        That still assumes that it’s “proper” to stay out of the way of the authorities.

        As to “pulling over a truckload of brown-skinned people”, I was under the impression they witnessed them cross the border. That would be illegal, and therefore well within the duties of a citizen to detain them until they can be adjudicated. (I admit I could be wrong on the facts, here. But, while the ACLU tweeted that they were ‘kidnappers’, it doesn’t appear he has been charged with any version of “illegal detention”.)

        Oh, and that “felon” bit? I find it interesting (in the sense of “really bad journalism”) that the Reuters article talks about him being arrested, but they never mention a conviction. You would think that – given the charge for which he was arrested – they would tell you precisely what he was actually convicted of.

        He has a long arrest record, dating back to at least 1986, when he was arrested and convicted of the “felony of false pretenses,” or fraud, in Midland County, Michigan. Decades later, in 2006, Hopkins was arrested in Klamath County, Oregon on charges of impersonating a police officer and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

        According to the arrest report filed in Klamath County, police found Hopkins at a gas station showing off a gun to a group of young people. The arrest report says that Hopkinns was also showing the group of juveniles a badge that said “special agent” and was telling them that he was a police officer. Hopkins pleaded guilty to impersonating a police officer and to one count of possessing a firearm.

        Note, I was not conspiracy theorizing about the conviction, I was pointing out how bad the journalism was. They easily could have pointed out his conviction, but went with his arrest instead. Was it error or trying to conflate “arrest” with “guilty”? I don’t know, but either is Bad Journalism.

      Your reparations and a new limit on school tuition and pay across the board depending on subject matter, and whether business is paying the salary for teaching for jobs they have waiting. or something like that.

      Almost he entire college education system and student loan system has been a scam of the students and of the public paying so much of the bill.
      It seems somewhat similar to the World Bank or China or others loaning money to countries with corrupt leaders and/or low IQ people that never will pay the loans back, then taking over the valuables in the nation.
      Many of those debts are not morally or legally obligated to be paid by certain principles of common law. But the government has the gun and legal enforcement powers.

        An example of getting a loan is in one of my favorite 1980’s movies. The protagonist, who lives in and takes care of a a trailer park his mother manages while working as a waitress, does not get the loan from the bank. The High School student looking to go to a good college, Alex Rogan, is devastated.
        Then Centauri (Robert Preston) shows up as a result of his high video game score, and the transition to becoming The Last Starfighter begins. So a great nice pleasant little movie develops. And he gets the girl (Catherine Mary Stewart).

    How often and which questions does government answer, and how often does government get it right?

    Governments of mainly similar people with much in common result in results most of the people want most often. Identity politics in use today is used to control those people and force them into results they do not want.
    All means are used to control by those not concerned about the people they desire to control.
