it might have originally been an anti-war song, but a friend of mine (now in Valhalla) used to start it up o his 8-track gong to work in 1970-71.
His work was flying out of Phuoa Vinh in his UH-1C gunship, to escort First Air Cav slicks- and deliver life-altering beat-downs to “Charlie” with 2.75inch rockets.
Yeah, the “My son is too good for military service” philosophy.
I was a Boy Scout in high school, early 1960s, and my father, a retired LtCol, was the Scoutmaster. We were sponsored by our church. One day a group of parishioners went to our pastor, and asked him if a “military man” should be permitted to hold a position of responsibility in the church.
He knew they were talking about my Father, but he told them he had no problem with the idea, and they were free to take up the question with the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee.
They asked what the PPRC had to do with the Scoutmaster.
He replied, “Oh. I thought you were talking about my service as an Army Chaplain.”

Same old, same old. Those that push for war don’t send their sons. Especially those in PolyTicks, or rich enough.

And that, as they say, was the end of that.
