Doing the math … 23 years plus some nine months puts Zed and Naomi hooking up circa 1997.

In 1997 … the Taliban had been in control of Afghanistan for about a year after a civil war that toppled the Soviet placed puppet. UBL and al Qaeda we’re on the rise and plotting there with the Taliban’s sanction. Boris Yeltsin was running Russia with a friendlier disposition toward the West. Slick Willie was selling out our technology to the ChiComs while playing hide the cigar with Monica in the Oval Orifice. Internet was done with a dial-up modem and America Online. And Hillary was soon to be droning on about a “vast right-wing conspiracy.”

    Time flies by …

  • How could Naomi not know she had a child there?

And still the question remains: “The Prodigal One”…

The child chose to be there and stay there? She squandered her chance at a life in the US? She had assets that were wasted? What made her a wastrel?

More importantly for our family…what changes there made her make the contact that could bring her “home” to her family’s love and forgiveness? Is she worthy of it?

      JTC,

Unlikely that Mia was raised in Afghanistan. Pretty sure the IDF / Mossad would have frowned on that. Under Israeli law, Mia is Jewish, as the religion and nationality are recognized as coming from the mother. Even if Naomi gave her up for adoption, Mia would have been raised in Israel.

At some point, she married, became a Christian, and ended up in Afghanistan with her husband. Were they missionaries? If so, Mia picked the one calling that was possibly more dangerous than her mother’s in Afghanistan.

  • Too Tall

I understand how Zed could be the father and not know. But “neither knew?”

How could Naomi not know? Or is the implication Naomi did not know her daughter was in Afghanistan?

Mia Owens-Levy? Mia as in “Missing in Action?” At least she knows the surnames of her parents. Who raised her, and how did she become a United States citizen without Zed knowing about her?

I realize ‘toon time is fungible but 23 years ago Zed could have been 25 to 30 years old, but Naomi would have been 20 at the oldest? And in all the time they served together since, Zed never realized Naomi had a daughter, his daughter? Talk about a blast from the past!

In any event, it appears Sam is about to teach Zed another memorable lesson from Kipling’s “The Female of the Species.”

If I was among the involved parties, I would accept NO EXPLANATION without support from verified DNA identifications made with solid evidence chains in place from start to finish. After 28 years of social proctology, I ASSUME fraud until disproven on any “Drop From The Sky” information of this sort. Real life seldom resembles The Hallmark Channel. NEITHER Zed nor Naomi knew? C’MON, MANG.

  • Kafiroon

A Redhead. A calculating “stink eye” look.
Zed, running will Not save you. The fallout of this depends entirely on the redhead’s internal temperature.

    • Don’t run, Zed. You’ll only die tired.

      Zar Belk!

I thought Zed had already told Sam that he and Naomi had been an unusually “close” sniper team, and they had agreed that what happened “before” in both their lives stayed in the before.

Others have noted that while Zed may have been kept in the dark about Mia, how could Naomi not know? Was she led to believe Mia had died in infancy? …and if so how come Mia is aware of her lineage?

So many questions, so little time to get Naomi and her daughter back to that Hind where ‘Toly waits. Methinks ‘Toly is going to have a few questions of his own. Interesting couple of weeks coming up at the Double D.

  • Too Tall

Forecasting in the real world is difficult. In the DBD world, it is downright surreal. That said:

    1. Sam will never be intimidated by Naomi again.
    2. Samantha Flanagan Owens will shortly chair a very memorable “Get Your Mind Right” meeting for all concerned. Even Tucker may hear a few reports of mama grizzly bear sightings in the county.
    3. Mia will be welcomed with open arms and prove herself more than worthy.
    4. Mia and the twins will bond tightly causing Zed’s hair to turn from grey to white.

  • JTC

Notwithstanding the careless and probably pretty furtive love that resulted as it often does in offspring…

But why exactly is Zed in fear for his life from the woman he has devoted it to ever since he’s known her? Unless the DBD time warp has me off on this, dude had every right and expectation to get laid in that time and place and circumstance…

Dealing with what is to come won’t be easy…but as in every time of concern and uncertainty in their married lives, they need to be a unified team and power.

Embrace your man Red, and let that maternal empathy for what his mind and heart are going through now kick in. Deal with it together.

    • Too Tall

Red will embrace Zed, he will figure it out, they will deal with it.

What was it Sam said when Zed presented her with the Escalade? “Oh, Zed you SHOULD have!”

    • Mike-SMO

Zed better review, “Romancing the Stone”. Going to be a hard landing.

    • Henry

I read Sam as not being angry at Zed, but coming to terms with the reality that “this girl is family now, we have a duty to her since she has no one else, and all that is about to force another adjustment in all our lives.”

  • JTC

    Love her double-entendre name…

But neither her being a missionary or my personal preference of a trained-in-Israel mil-op agent squares with the whole “Prodigal One” Who or what has she betrayed or wasted? Was she seeking exit as anAmerican or an Israeli? And if the former did she initiate it before the troubles? Was it a plan or desperation? If the latter why would her IDF people forsake her there? Lots of interesting possibilities.

Cool thing is, as we try to forecast the surreality, we can also toss out shit ourselves and see if some of it sticks in the mind and pen of the artiste…Been known to happen. 🙂

    • JTC

And as we anticipate and maybe initiate things to come, what do you want to bet she’s as hot as a firecracker? 😀

      • Too Tall

If Chris draws her, how could she not be?

        • Tom Stockton

It is, indeed, Mr. Muir’s penchant — God bless him! (Although he can draw the butt-ugly ones, too… Xir comes to mind.)

      • So remove and renounce those imperious rags girl, much as we here renounce our facial rags, and for much the same reason.

She may be so relieved that she’ll want to be naked all the time! 🙂

  • steveb919

    This is getting weird?

    • Chris Muir

      Tell me about it. heh.

  • Mike-SMO

“Husband” is undefined. He may have been “American”. A “missionary” is dangerous but probably less so than being “Jewish” and working for/with Mossad. THAT woul be dangerous. All in all, a missionary talks to “everyone”, so it might not have been a bad cover in government or “neutral” areas. “Prodigal” may refer to joining with an “American” in the “Stans” instead of hanging at home like a good “Momma”.”DD” is “American” but in some ways also “international” with connections to Japan and South America. Or just becoming, or acting, like a Christian.

“Jo” may need another software upgrade.

If Mia is ~23, there has to be a child/grandchild floating around someplace. Poor Zed.

    • DogByte6RER

Missionary work in Islamic and Muslim dominant cultures is extremely dangerous. I would think that at least a small sleeper cell of Mossad agents in country in an inhospitable place like Afghanistan would have a strong deep cover and high quality documents, along with training, countermeasures and learned spy craft to fallback on.

Missionaries in Islamic countries, even in the now old “good” Afghanistan with American support and boots on the ground, have still been under lots of danger because the penalty for leaving Islam for another religion is typically death. I would imagine that Christian missionaries caught proselytizing in Islamic countries face similar penalties.

Some good sources for much of this can be found at The Voice of the Martyrs and at The Religion of Peace blog.

Meanwhile … it will be interesting to see how Mia’s backstory unfolds.

    From yesterday …

Moshe: “… That’s how we got a hit on the name.”

Does this imply that the Mossad had the US Embassy Kabul penetrated to greater or lesser extent, or that an Embassy staffer spontaneously passed the information on to the Mossad? Perhaps a SOCOM buddy of Zed’s?

    • Kafiroon

Why not? Everyone else has us bugged. And this administration will give them information without even asking for it.

  • Too Tall

Just realized that in the last two panels on August 29, Mia is holding something in her hands that Naomi recognizes as “my (her) heart.”

    • Fox2!

Mia is holding her hands in the “heart” shape. Could Naomi have taught her that?

      • Too Tall

At full size and resolution, it appears Mia is holding a solid object in her hands in the last two panels on August 29.

        • Fox2!

          A heart shaped sapphire?

  • JIMV

Very complicated…sigh! All I wanted was a full cast naked skinny dip for a week or so.

Looks like we might have one more for the party.

I’m just a great big old fat ball of confusion now…

  • cb

From Aug 29: ”she and husband”… “the husband” ~ not ”her husband”? Who did this husband belong to? I get confused easily,,, help please!

    • Chris Muir

      Mia’s husband. 🙂

  • Pamela

A quote from Shakespeare in Love “It’s A Mystery” in the tale and all will be revealed.

    • But we didn’t have a chance to help shape that mysterious tale (and tail 😉 ). Maybe we should have as some of the Bard’s work could have used some collaboration. I love Willy but…

Anyway, we can toss out some scenarios; I would be especially interested in your articulated storyline Miz P. , neglecting not the prurient innuendo… 😀

      • And as played out by Affleck? Ugh. Easy to improve on that.

  • Halley

Killed… as in “the little death”?

    • And the toon title “Fatality”

      Sounds so unspecific, and so…permanent.

  • Kafiroon

Ok. Love all the supposition thrown out here. A whole list of scenarios. So I figure with all the attention the bad situation is in Afghanistan, Sam, still having some lingering thoughts on Zed and Naomi, so all she has to do is dream.

  • Malatrope

I suppose it is possible, through some devious and complex clusterfuck of reasons (nah, we never see that here), that the child was taken away and Naomi was told it died.

  • DogByte6RER

Life imitating art … Kabul has become Mos Eisley Spaceport.

Remember when that Pencilneck shut down all the containment systems and all those spooks went wild?

Yeah Pencilneck now lives on Pa. Ave. and the containment system was Afghanistan. Now with all the Isis monsters busted out and Zuul and Gozer running the show the world as we know it is in serious jeopardy.

We’re going to have to power up and cross some streams very soon.

  • Checkers

I might as well guess the plot line, everyone else is.
Naomi was told the child died at birth,, as Mossad did not want to lose such a promising young agent to motherhood . Mia was raised by a high level Israeli family. She married and became a missionary or other relief worker. Her husband was killed in the current quagmire. Even Zed, with all his connections could not get a chopper into Afghanistan. But, Mossad could and did as Mia has high level connections. Naomi and Zed are both blindsided by this information. Naomi was not at all friendly to her Mossad connections on the ground as she feels betrayed by her old handlers.
Oh,, and Mia could easily be pregnant!
