I prefer my survival instinct from a distance. 5.56 or 308. Less messy to me.
Buuuut, in a pinch, a baseball or cricket bat will do for close up.
There’s nothing quite so satisfying as the pull in your shoulder muscles from the good, solid swing of a T handled spade.
There is an old saying
