Plus, I don’t see a real downside – aside from taking a hit in world popularity and we’already pretty well universally reviled. Who is likely to respond with nukes if we DO? John, you’re on the wrong page. There is no “interpretation” of the qur’an and hadith. There is no difference in opinion except over who became the head of islam when mohammed died (difference between Sunni and Shia). The only reason non-muslims thing there are different interpretations is because the muslim leaders and muslim teachers (imams) practice taquiyya (deception and lying) along with kitman (telling only part of the truth – lying by omission).
This notion that the “bad” muslims ignore the “nice” parts of the qur’an is deception. For a very brief time, mohammed tried to suck up to the Jews and the Christians, but when they wouldn’t support his made-up “religion” (which stole some ideas from both of them) and basically ignored him, he decided he would gain power and respect by becoming a warlord. The earlier parts of the qur’an were replaced by later parts where he said allah told him that infidels should be killed (“struck on the neck” – beheaded), and other nasty things including child rape and “warbrides” (sex slaves from women and children taken in battle). The replacement of the few early “nice” parts is called “abrogation”. And any time there is something that sounds nice – like giving to charity – it applies _only_ to muslims, not to non-muslims. No Muzzie country has them (that I know of) and the only counties with both nukes and a delivery system are highly unlikely to be willing to unleash the dogs of thermonuclear war over those two cities.
The problem is, I suspect even the destruction of those two cities would not end the scourge. It would hurt. It would rock them back on their heels – possibly for a good while but I have to believe that the Rug Huggers would come back much as the Jews did after the destructions of Jerusalem and the Temple. I suspect that all the destruction of Mecca would do is to radicalize a larger percentage of the Rug Huggers – maybe even a majority – and fill their bellies with unquenchable fire for revenge. The Muzzies are already dispersed . Mecca and Meda are mere symbols and the loss of their physical reality would only make them more powerful – as well as making their populations along with the pilgrims there at the time into martyrs if not saints.

We really don’t need to use mega nukes to do this. A hand full of 50 – 100 KTs dropped in a circle around the holy area will do just as well. They should obliterate Riadh on principle, but leave Mecca and Medina untouched, just inaccessible. All future Haji would have to ride an American lead bus. We then broadcast to the world how tolerant and loving of islam we are. We harmed no holy sites, but served notice what we would and could do. We also would eliminate most of the financial support of islamic atrocities. Any retaliation against the US would result in the circle getting smaller.
Since the Obamination has seen to the unilateral reduction of our nuclear arsenal, we may not have them anymore, but the “neutron” bombs which relied upon radiation instead of destructive power could be used to kill muslims in Riadh and Jeddah. Seriously though. If I had a button to wipe out ISIS, Hamas, Hezbollah, Boko Haram and all those other jihadi assholes, but it would also kill a million “innocent” Muslim civilians, I would punch it twice just to make sure.

John, you’re on the wrong page. There is no “interpretation” of the qur’an and hadith. There is no difference in opinion except over who became the head of islam when mohammed died (difference between Sunni and Shia). The only reason non-muslims thing there are different interpretations is because the muslim leaders and muslim teachers (imams) practice taquiyya (deception and lying) along with kitman (telling only part of the truth – lying by omission).
This notion that the “bad” muslims ignore the “nice” parts of the qur’an is deception. For a very brief time, mohammed tried to suck up to the Jews and the Christians, but when they wouldn’t support his made-up “religion” (which stole some ideas from both of them) and basically ignored him, he decided he would gain power and respect by becoming a warlord. The earlier parts of the qur’an were replaced by later parts where he said allah told him that infidels should be killed (“struck on the neck” – beheaded), and other nasty things including child rape and “warbrides” (sex slaves from women and children taken in battle). The replacement of the few early “nice” parts is called “abrogation”. And any time there is something that sounds nice – like giving to charity – it applies _only_ to muslims, not to non-muslims. Check it out.
You do realize that it could be done? It would be expensive, but not impossible, to divert a small (say 100m dia.) asteroid and steer it in. Or simply drop a “crowbar” from orbit, which would give results indistinguishable from a meteor impact.

Decades ago, Dr. John Lewis stated in “The Rain of Iron and Ice” that the maximum speed at which a reasonable sized impactor could avoid being ripped apart by friction in the Earth’s atmosphere was 20 kilometers/second. 25 kilometers/second would rip the impactor apart, though the kinetic energy would still be turned into heat. It would possibly flash fry Mecca, but it would be rebuildable. The Caliphate revivalists could claim it was a nuke from whoever they decide should be hated most.
Remember that it is *not* the religious aspects of Islam that threaten us. The threat comes from the *Imperial*Ideology* which seized Islam within a decade after Mohammed died, and emphasized all his teachings that would support the Arab copy of the Roman Empire of Constantinople, the Caliphate. Christianity decisively escaped a similar capture only at the Treaty of Westphalia, in 1648, and Christianity had had the advantage of developing for 300 years *outside* the Empire’s hierarchies, before it too was captured by Constantine. Only when Islam decisively escapes the Caliphate and its religious justifications will it become safe, for the rest of us.
