MI-24 Hind?! F++K! Me! One thing we were taught in the Cold War days is that is One Bad Ass ‘coptor and it would disintegrate your ass as soon as look at you. Damned near impenetrable by ordinary small arms. Shoot at it, and all you’ll do is tickle it and bring unwanted attention to yourself.
Now, all that said, and my screaming brain is back under control, I don’t know if the reality lives up to the hype, but I ain’t about to poke the bear and find out.
That’s normally a two man ops – a pilot up front, and a gunner sitting behind. Who’s the second person, the gunner?

“This story shall the good man teach his son:” around the Thanksgiving table at the Double D for generations to come…along with trajectory plots for all the turkeys Sam ever launched.

Naomi, you and Zed HAVE a daughter, a pretty amazing one at that.

Along the way, you and Zed shoveled a lot of dirt, together. More than anyone else, you may know how Zed earned his callsign “Cockroach.” Perhaps you are alive because of his skills and abilities. And now each of you is married to someone else with families of your own, as well as unbreakable bonds of friendship among each member.

There is family, friendship, and that something else the Bard called “we Band of Brothers.” You, Zed, and your families are blessed by, and richer for, sharing all of that. Note that you are a far better Aunt to Zed’s children than, for example, Skye.

So, you can and should call him Zed. If for no other reason than your daughter will call him Dad, and her children will call him Granddad.

        JTC,

Naomi earned the title of “Aunt” via friendship long before we knew of Mia. Unlike Skye, Naomi would never name a child “Spot.” That young man STILL needs a name, such as Wade, that he can live up to.

Looking forward to the reaction of Ol’ Bob, the .22LR magnate, when Sam, Naomi, Jo, Mia, Kiko, and Mari, arrive to load up the Escalade with bricks of .22 for their Girls’ Day of target practice.

Also, looking forward to the response of the young man behind the counter of the ice cream shop in Gunpowder when they all saunter in for ice cream. Like the Car Wash, it will probably cause one of the few traffic jams Tucker has had to deal with as Sheriff.

Finally, in response to CuriousB, Scott Bieber, and JTC from yesterday:

I thought the Moneyball metric for an MG had very little to do with actual miles driven and was more metaphysical. Or to quote Otter from Animal House: “I anticipate a deeply religious experience.”

But Naomi’s been around for years and while she certainly earned inclusion into the brood I don’t think I ever heard anyone call her Aunt? And at this point, everyone having called her Naomi all this time, that is what they should continue to do imo.

Mia though is their Sister, and true to another old Southernism as I mention below, many older girl siblings are tagged by the younger ones as “Sister”. My Georgia wife and her four brothers and sisters were separated from the oldest (from another mother in this case) by a decade, and Sister she was and is to them, even as they all have moved into their late 60’s and 70’s.

Yeah, metaphysical is the only relationship I had with that old MGB-GT, as I sometimes sat in it imagining the twists and turns, making mouth noises for that sweet lit 4 since it never uttered a peep or moved an inch on its own. 🙁

Lost track though that we were supposed to be suggesting monikers for Mia’s parents to address one another and for Mia to address them…

Still down with all except Mia calling Naomi Naomi including Zed.

But since Lover-Boy or Stud-Muffin probably won’t work for Naomi to call Zed (unless we want to hurry up WWIII that is already actively bubbling)…let’s stick to his actual name Zed for her to address him now; she may feel ill at ease with that considering their history, but their future is a different story; call him Zed.

And Mia. We don’t know what the family history was like for her over there, but she can sure build a strong family future here. Not a damn thing wrong and everything right wirh calling your natural parents Mom and Dad. Do it.

I’m suddenly reminded that I need to do up the parody I’ve had in my head for decades now but haven’t gotten ’round to it. It would of course be a Weird Al type thing (I was doin’ such before he ever met Dr. Demento — well, ok, maybe not that early – still…) with the Fleetwood Mac song “Rhiannon.” The verses would start out something like

“Bonanza rings like a bell o’er the range while
    Ride’n the Ponderosa.
Drivin’ the herds with a beer in the hand
    or whiskey-laced mimosa…”

Well, ok, the parody lyrics might need some work, but primarily, I’m thinking of when the one-word chorus (and the title of the song) comes ’round, instead of “Rhi-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-non,” we hear “Bon-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-an-za”

Trust me on this — it works. But the kicker, and the main reason I wanna do this up, is that the baseline underneath while that chorus starts in ringing like a belle through the night, is that signature riff of the Bonanza theme song, “Dut-dudl-lut, dudludludludludl doo Dah! Dut-dudl-lut, Dot, dut-dudlut-dat, Doo Dot-Doh!.”

I’m tellin’ ya, I works — I can hear it in my head 🙂

Anyway, off track I guess, but I can’t help thinking of the Double-D here with todays strip and that song (well, both songs) going through my head simultaneously…

One of the nicer things about growing up Southern is that you can adopt as many relatives as you require. My Mom and Dad were both orphaned, but we grew up with two sets of grandparents and numerous aunts and uncles, none of which were related by blood. I’m sure that the Double D will sort it out to everyone’s satisfaction.

They will, and they are fortunate to have so many to choose from, blood or not.

You were too, but it’s a whole ‘nother thing to start from scratch as you did; you really lucked out compared to many orphans I have seen (usually drug babies), and you ended up with an extended family of choice!

Our ranch family has a deep and wide base of loved ones in the direct blood line, and based on that, adding to their extended family, including Mia who is Zed’s natural daughter and a blood sister to his kids, and to Naomi too, as the blood Mama of her.

The question as to what to call each other that a little complicated; and while the Southern vernacular does embrace “aunt” or “auntie” for dear friends who are defacto family, these are actual family members so something more inclusive is needed for them I think.

At this point Naomi is Naomi to everyone there including Zed’s girls, and that’s how it should stay for them I think. For Mia? Well, another old Southern thang is when there is an older sister that is removed in some fashion from the nuclear family, the term “Sister” is often used and I always liked that.

Around here, it seems like everyone is interrelated (or inbred, your choice) in one way or another, I feel like an outsider because we moved here when I was about eight and still I’m not a ‘local’, even if I was born in the next town over about 15 miles away.
Married another out-of-towner and my kids were born in different provinces so…pretty near sixty years on and still not part of the ‘in crowd’ because I don’t have any relatives that are.

Well, “Hoss” works as a better handle than “cockroach”. At least around the dinner table. Odd affectation of “Col” Naomi. Mia will have an interesting adaption. Zed, a sniper tends to work solo, while Naomi is very conscious of position in the hierarchy. Mia was raised in an organized world but seems to have done well in chaos.

Love the Hind. Gettin’g parts has got to be a stinker. Is the daughter going to move from a wrench on the pickup to ground crew on the “bird”? Speaking of which, what is in the “cans” under the singletts? Surely, someone in that group has come up with some “Hellfires” with “personality”.
