More deep wisdom from the quiet one whose eyes some lucky guy is going to get happily lost in forever.

Mia may look like a blond version of Kiko, but I suspect she and Mari are much closer to being kindred spirits.

Great commentary on “What is American Citizenship”
    First couple of paragraphs –

    Commentary

These days, the idea of citizenship immediately calls to mind the idea of rights: we have rights because we are citizens of a rights-protecting nation. Behind this idea is the Declaration of Independence, which proclaims that all men are created equal and are endowed by their creator with certain “unalienable” rights.

Yet the Constitution begins differently, by announcing a decision: We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, do ordain and establish this particular constitution. One document announces a “proposition,” as Lincoln called it—that all have equal rights. The other document establishes a fact: “We the people” will be governed in this particular way, and in no other. All citizens, therefore, share in this responsibility, which makes of citizenship not simply a guarantee of rights, but an office, with a set of duties to perform.

Citizenship as an office, or as a duty, is a discordant note in an age of “rights talk.” Yet we can exercise our rights only because we live under a government that rests on the consent of the governed. We give our consent in many different ways. We pay taxes, of course, and we obey the laws. But the same might be said of the citizens of Canada, or France, or many other free nations. What makes American citizenship different?

Got my swag. Ruminated over the Double D membership card. Gonna be rambling around Texas within the next few months, and would be insanely happy to stop by and sample Travis’s Q, but of course that isn’t gonna happen.

If there were a real place in Texas with proprietors and food like the fabled Double D, where would it be? My vote would be for a little place I love in Ozona — the proprietors are a lot older, but the food and the politics are a lot like our heroes’. Though being in a converted gas station, the place is a lot lunchier than a cozy dinner club.

Anybody else got some other nominations?

Blessed are the collectivists (of whatever flag) who arrive at that question, for they shall see a new light.

Having had this epiphany, or formed her hypothesis, expect Skye to go through the Freudian stages of grief. First will be denial. Intense denial. Then anger, lots of it, but directed where? Internal, towards the Left, or seeking to blame others (the Right) for her own willful blindness? Which is typical lib projectionism. Eventually … at least 20 DBD comics from now, she might get to acceptance. But given her personality, it could go “too far” … she’ll buy simple white underwear, dress modestly, get a job at Kroegers, find Jesus, and become a priggish judgemental “holier than thou” holy roller. Far fetched you think? It isn’t, it’s the same outlook but merely the other side of the coin.

And I wish Chris could spend a little more time drawing Kiko, so she doesn’t look like a depressed zombie. I know, typical teen girl … but give her eyes and let her look up once in a while.

She has eyes alright, zoom in on those piercing blue ones looking up from what is at hand, penetratingly and confidently ahead to what will come next…

Which is and must be as the piece mentions, “Thermidorian”. But more immediate, more radical, and more violent.

And it will be on her and her generation to enact it.

Not a tectonic shift but just another round of scales falling from the eyes of any who will open them. This time it is Skye entering the Damascus section of Portland…but by my count this is her third “awakening”…will this one hold?

I think they’ve all held at some level, but it is not a simple or easy process to undo a lifetime of lies nor is it easy to overcome the Left’s biggest hurdle; to wit learn to become an adult and leave the child behind.
I for one believe the latter is the hardest in this day and age, where modern life has been modeled too closely to perpetual childhood.

      I’ve seen that too…in a mirror.

Not as hot as our Skye there, but in 1981 not too bad, if you forgive the curly perm,,,which is no longer possible forty years on.

The falling of the scales though, the opening of the eyes and mind that engenders that look of awe, was complete and permanent, thanks RR.
