MythBusters did a segment on pirate myths, including the concept that the patch was to keep one eye dark-adapted for fighting in the dark below-decks parts of a ship. It seemed to work, rating it a “PLAUSIBLE.”
And I suppose you pronounce your first name “Froaderick”?

I remember night qualifications. Some dummies had to smoke, and as a result, they didn’t see in the dark so well. Those of us that didn’t look at the glowing end of the cigarette scored much higher.
Yep, good point. I was a smoker back then but knew enough & was able to abstain because a good qual was more important to me. Hell, they taught it, so too bad you bolos.

According to Angus Konstam ( who sometimes gets it right), the main reason was to avoid falling over things belowdecks.

I loved smokers on night tactical exercises. They showed up so nicely on even 1stGen IR sights.
