Walt, short of the hard drive being physically damaged files are usually recoverable. Lots of info on line, most of it fairly easy to do. Services available if this is outside your comfort zone.
I’ve done this a couple of times on both disk and SSD drives.
If you were from my area of the frozen north of Chinada, I’d help.
This might help them if the pc still tries to powoer up but wont load the OS.
On a working computer, download a copy of Linux Mint, and install on a USB stick.
Then insert the stick into the “bad” computer and boot up, it will give you the option to run Linux Mint directly from the USB Stick as if it were an installed OS.
Then simply copy-paste the data from the bad PC’s hard drive to an external Hard Drive. Data Saved.

This should be a good reminder for everyone to get a sturdy power back-up (more than a surge protector) for their home computers. Mine is a CyberPower 1500va, usually $200-250 depending on where you shop. I sleep much better.
Tell your wife to enjoy the effect while it lasts!! ;-D
I had the same thing happen to me except that I’m 75 with a full, snow white beard!!!
Was in a liquor store last week checking out. They have the predominately displayed “WE ID” sign on the register.
I placed my purchases on the counter and pull out my card to pay, and this kid, who I can only conclude is a graduate of our wonderful ‘Pub-lick Edu-ma-ka-shun Cistum’ asks me for ID!!!!
I laughed, thanking him for the compliment and tried to use my card, but he actually STOPPED ME refusing to complete the sale until I produced proper “proof of age”!!!!
I was so stunned by his absolutely stellar display of abject stupidity and utter lack of critical thinking skills, that I just left my bottles on the counter, told the kid that I’d go somewhere else that had cashiers who possessed basic intelligence and common sense…….and walked out the door.
I’ve never run into anything like that before.

I live in Texas and if a store is caught selling to minors they are required to ask for ID no matter how old they are. It’s part of the penalty they have pay. Yes it’s recorded on paper.

In TN they card everyone – PERIOD. State law . . .

DW & J.D. Egbert……Yes, I understand why laws like this are necessary…..no argument whatsoever. HOWEVER…..I’ve been through both TX and TN in the past year, bought food and booze in both states and was never carded once based on the OBVIOUS APPEARANCE of my age. Can you honestly believe some underaged kid is going to spend the time, energy and $$$ getting made up to look like a 75yo bearded retiree just to score some beer, wine or liquor??
As I said, I fully understand the need/reason for laws such as this. But isn’t there SOME room in enforcing said laws/policies for the exercise of basic common sense and critical thinking skills????
Were I a cashier at some store that demanded everyone be carded, if I had ANY questions concerning a customer’s age, I’d card them in a heartbeat…….but someone who is OBVIOUSLY over 21, I’m not going to bother…….and I also know that all my actions are being video monitored. And that doesn’t bother me in the slightest.
I’m not bashing on the laws in any way, shape, or form, I’m just asking for a modicum of INTELLIGENCE and COMMON SENSE be exercised in their implementation and enforcement!!

I live in Florida BTW, and we have the very same laws……and in the past 5+ years I’ve been retired, I’ve yet to be carded whenever I’ve bought booze….jus’ soz ya knoz!! 😉

Oregon has the same law (I don’t drink anymore–stupid meds), and after Despicable Kate Brown and her COVID Stasi, nobody is willing to buck the law. I’m 73 and people older than me are getting carded for beer.
Maybe not likely here in Flyover County, but I can see a woke 60 year old narcing on a booze sale.

Stoffer’s Lasagna somehow identifies me as a family of four.
Mistaking a 16 yr old for an 18 yr old could get one into some dire legal consequences. Passing her off as such could too. Better rethink that gambit mom.
@Badger52…Droop tips…..my first thought was design inspiration from the North American XB-70 Valkyrie. That was the first aircraft I ever saw that used that design/technique.
Definitely a blast from the past; several of us in my childhood group built models of the thing.

Absolutely GORGEOUS bird!!!!! Did you know that National Geographic of all publications did a full article on her design, materials and construction? Incredible article……and the pix were stunning.
I loved one comment on a picture of her AB’d turbojet engines: “Gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘6-pack'” 😀 😀 😀
I was building a flying model airplanes all through the 60’s and I saw advertised in one of my issues of Model Airplane News, a profile type .049 powered pusher free-flight XB-70 that spanned about 38″ at the wingtips. All balsa construction for about $5-6. I never got one because I KNEW I’d lose it on it’s maiden flight……and at the time didn’t trust FF planes.

Drinkin’ on a fake ID at 16. Biker chicks. Pitchers. How did we ever get out alive? Meeting prodigies was and is always an adventure, too Sophomoric humor still gets me.
We’re the heirs to a life so hard you were considered to be an Old Man and a survivor at age 32.
On the distaff side it was just as common to pump out kids at the rate of one every two years, starting around age 14 and ending in exhaustion. Probably during or shortly after childbirth.
Ignorance, rebellion, and excess hormones was probably what kept us all from just crawling under a rock and dying in despair.
No toon for a day (or more) is such a rarity (how the hell do you do that Muir?) that the last time I recall It happening was when Zed’s Dad and Chris’ Dad died, one of the most heartfelt and hurtful episodes I’ve ever seen…
So I could be wrong and there may be other lapses, but not that I recall and I don’t miss many DBD posts…anybody else?
He just wants to see if they’re all real people and not cover for a ‘woke’ rubber stamp ring…I hope he’s renting a big tent because every living person is going to show up with at least a dozen ‘aides’ in tow since most generals/senior managers in any gov’t dept are incapable of answering a simple yes/no question without at least three off-site meetings, a half dozen outside ‘consultant’ reports and a high priced research team ‘deep dive’ first.
I like the spin that this is going to be group wall to wall Counselling with “optional” immediate retirement papers already printed for the appropriate miscreants.
From my personal experiences I’d say about 20% of Flag Officers (probably less on USPHS) are competent and appropriately committed to their oath of office.
It’s a deep swamp, but someone has to drain it.

After a bit of day dreaming, I came up with the vision that it would probably only take one C-5, loaded with pallets of strapped down Flags and their staff, to make an air drop over the Gulf of America to help solve the problem…
I would like to see all those appointed/promoted by The One and Bai Me letting the door hit them where they think, as they leave along with every one of their “aides” told, “You are retired, Now.”
I’ve often had trouble with the characterization of a flag officer or a general officer being retired as their career is over.As a retired 05 I would submit that if you’re admiral or general officer, you’ve had your career

You’ve gone stealthy here, chris. Just noticed, so to speak.
My computer finally croaked and the new one is getting prepped I may be delayed these next few days in getting any new toons up, perhaps not
Okay, as long as you’re healthy
Ooh, child labor!
It’s about time!
The children yearn for the mines…
Funny… I was going to post the same thing but I wasn’t sure anyone would get it.
My ‘puter croaked during a power out/on/out/on/etc fracas.
Lost files, pictures, lotsa stuff non-recoverable. Bummer.

More to the point, back up your gear regularly. UPS is great, but doesn’t cover fire, theft, or internal breakdown.
Cool beard Scott!
Just identify as an 18 year old. I know I do..

I claim that I am 21 and holding
I was mistaken for my best friend’s father at age 19 and I haven’t gotten any younger…
After 40 years of experience at being 22, I really thought I’d be killing it?!? 😉
I’ve been 39 for the last 47 years.
Hey it worked for Jack Benny for 41 years!
I was given a ‘seniors discount’ at a local store…I was 37 🙁
The drinking age here is 18, my wife was ‘carded’ at 24…

Thinking it’s active camouflage.
Basic gander and interest if tagged “18”.
But if underage. It gets focused fire attention from Dems and liberals.
They’re likely to assume 18 = used goods, past expiration date for best consumption.
Droop tips. Bet that thing handles wonderfully into the smaller strips at low speed.

She might be 16 able to pass for 18, but saying she’s 14 would get her exclusive access to some pretty highly placed dems.
some of them men, but not many….
How old are you? Well, I remember when
Sat nite live was funny.
Actually, mentally 29, Physically almost
three times that.
As stated above…..75…..and my motto since about 35 has always been:
“Growing old is mandatory…..growing UP is optional…..and I opted out a helluva long time ago”!!! ;-D
Just out of curiosity, is the plane in the toon modeled after a real aircraft? Curious minds, yada, yada….
Nope made up. Won’t have a toon up tomorrow but Saturday
should be ok
Take yer time.
As Tom Bodett would say, “We’ll keep the lights on for ya.”

When my mom and sister passed. But we continue…
Continue on, yes. Just glad nobody in our real or cartoon world died this time.
No worries on the ‘Toons, Chris. We’ll all be here after the “Intermission” The Archives are a good place to enjoy if so inclined.
Yep, no toon today no worries. Off topic time. Mystery meeting… https://ripleyporch.blogspot.com/2025/09/pentagon-meeting-for-generals.html
