AFAIK, five real women (as opposed to fictional or mythical characters, such as the goddess Liberty) have appeared on U.S. bills or coins minted for circulation, so far:
1. Pocahontas was featured on the series 1869-1878 $10 notes.
2. Martha Washington appeared on the series 1886 and 1891 $1 silver certificates. She also was on the series 1896 $1 silver certificate.
3. Susan B. Anthony dollars were minted from 1979 to 1981, and in 1999.
4. The Sacagawea dollar was minted for circulation from 2000 to 2001, and from 2009 to 2011.
5. Helen Keller was on the reverse of the Alabama quarter in 2003.
Today all are collectible and worth several times face value.
(I had to look the first two up. I don’t remember THAT far back.)
For the past couple of years, the coin’s reverse features famous American women on the current quarter dollar, where George Washinton is facing right rather than left.
in 2022 these were Maya Angelou, Doctor Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller, Nina Otero-Wilson, and Anna May Wong
in 2023 these are Bessie Coleman, Edith Kanaka’ole, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jovita Idar, and Maria Tallchief
I don’t know how long they are going to continue this as there are probably quite a lead time to produce these coins.
Actually zero collectibility and zero premium for SBA and Sac dollars (mint is still stuck storing a billion of ’em) and most of the commem quarters…
Now if they minted them in gold and/or silver…some of the special-issue commems might be 90% but other than that, put ’em in circulation. Ever get one of those car dealer promos where they give you a Golden Dollar” for taking a test drive? That’s one way to dump a bunch of ’em….
Resulting in how many people bringing their “gold dollars” to me over the years wanting to know how much they could get for them? My response, “go spend them but you might have to educated the drive-thru drones that they are legal currency.”
You know every thief and thug in red law and order states are making plans for a big summertime move to take a big bite out of the Big Apple!
