Day By Day

  • JTC

Had seen that report but it can’t be true because I have seen no mention of it at all on any of the major news outlets.

Correct Jo, not the machines fault…yet. But give the ChiComs about, oh, four years or so and their machines will be our masters.

Best wishes for all Americans and America that the new year will be better than the old year…we’ll see how it looks about Wednesday.

    • Unca Walt

And within four hours of that bombshell, the DS had trucks removing the ballots that were to be inspected.

      Right out in the open.

    • Fredrick Brohn

Why blame the machines, indeed! After all, they were only obeying orders!

  • President Elect Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH B Woodman

Never blame the machine. Instead blame the engineer, designer, builder, programmer (and I do, often, as I repair a poorly designed piece of equipment). Remember GIGO, Garbage In, Garbage Out. (and there is absolutely nothing garbage about Jo)
(only slightly OT, I’m in the process of testing some minor reinforcements on some parts that break often. maybe I can eventually put myself out of business. naaaaah. never happen. “you can never make anything foolproof, fools are too ingenious” )

    • Kafiroon

We used to just blame the bubble gum chewers.

      Card punchers to you Young’uns.

    • JTC

Except as I allude above if/when AI fully rolls out.

And even then yeah I guess blame -or credit- lies with the human hand behind it. It’s a matter of whose hand I guess which will be nearly impossible to control once that genie gets out of the bottle.

Which appears to be why Elon Musk is so openly leery of its pursuit. And who would know better than him the danger that a combination of “thinking” machines and an evil human hand would pose?

      • John

Scott Adams has already pointed out that the AI is already up and is, by virtue of its totally impenetrable algorithms already out of control. What Elon Musk wants is a _rational_ AI, and although I wish him the best of luck I’m not holding my breath. As was pointed out before, “Nothing is foolproof because fools are so ingenious.” To that I would add Murphy’s Law and our own genetic predisposition to game _any_ system. And the latter is the reason no command economy will survive for long. There is a reason no socialist scheme has _ever_ survived.

    • Lucius Severus Pertinax

In the Army, we called it “Private Proofing”

      • President Elect Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH B Woodman

        We called it “infantry proofing”.

      • John D. Egbert

        In the Navy its “Sailorproofing.”

        • Polly Cy

In academe we called it “dean proofing.”

      • MAJ Arkay

And we never, ever found ANYTHING that would be Private/Infantry/Sailor Proof.

        • President Elect Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH B Woodman

Never. Because fools are too ingenious.

    • Old Codger

Fools are fools. They are neither ingenious nor creative. You can never make anything foolproof because the UNIVERSE is infinitely creative WRT creating fools.

      • Kafiroon

I’ve been around enough to See some highly creative schemes of some fools.
And smart enough to get out of ‘Dodge’ before the results occurred.

  • ottersmith

We’ve survived 2020, at least here in Minnesnowta, so “Happy New Year” to each of you!

    • WayneM

2020 got it’s last kick in the guts in for me…

My father (age 82) spent the day in his happy place… puttering away in his shop… Overnight, he awakened briefly in pain and then passed out. My mother had him rushed to the hospital via ambulance but he passed before arrival. MD figures it was from an abdominal aneurysm but they’ll do an autopsy to be sure. If so, his offspring should be checked for similar issues as it is correctable.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, I might not be able to travel to the region… and if I do, I will be quarantined for two weeks…

      • JTC

        Condolences Wayne…

Dad has a new “happy place” now, in the arms of God. He will Rest In Peace and you should try to do the same.

      • OH Bridge Guy

Condolences, Wayne. Sorry you didn’t get to say goodbye, but glad he was “in his happy place” and didn’t suffer.

      • Pamela

Wayne~ My Condolences to your Mother, you and your family.
That’s how my Dad went, though the Agent Orange was a close second.

      • Kafiroon

That is a system shocker for anyone Wayne. Know that there are many that will read that who will have sympathy and condolences for you. God Bless You and your Family.
Given preferences, that has appeal to me in my old age.

      • Swansonic

My condolences and prayers for you and your family. May God give you peace and strength during this time.

We lost our father-in-friend 3 weeks ago after a fairly quick slide through caner meds and dementia. The funeral was just family a week before Christmas and we’re hoping for a celebration in the spring.

Love to you and yours and remember that he is always with you.

      • Chris Muir

Wayne, so sorry to hear this. You keep up your spirit, help your Mom, we’re behind ya.

      • GWB

        Condolences, Wayne

      • Too Tall

Eternal rest grant unto Wayne’s father, O Lord. Continue to hold Wayne, his mom, and their family in friends in the palm of Your hand.

        • WayneM

Thanks, everyone. It looks like I’m going to be watching a video feed from Texas rather than attending in person.

I get a bit misty when I think of the reunion between my dad and my daughter… They both loved big hugs, motorcycles and other things. I expect they’re looking down and laughing at me.

  • steveb919

For the new year they should give all police a shoot to kill order for looting and property damage assholes and don’t hassle citizens for defending their property and lives.. That kind of punk ass behavior would stop in a New York second. There might be peace at last in those democrat communist states. We don’t seem to have that here in the south. I wonder why. Just a thought, My new years wish is for peace in America and Trump to be sworn in again.

    • steveb919

I wish all DBDers to have a Happy and Prosperous New Year and especially our main man Chris Muir.

    • caved1ver01

      But wouldn’t that be RAAAAAACIIISSST?!?

One of the biggest problems in contemporary US Society is that no one wants to call out the silent majority of so-called “hard working, law-abiding” blacks who remain silent when an inordinate number of their ilk are engaging every kind violent crime, including BLM & ANTIFA-sponsored looting & pillaging in major metropolitan areas. Why are they silent? Likely a mixture of implicit support for said behavior, racial solidarity, or a fear of backlash from fellow blacks.

      • JTC

All of the above. But the bigger question is why we allow, even encourage the behavior of the thugs and their silent enablers.

Read a piece a few days ago that correctly assigned the blame for that on our mindless pursuit and unquestioned defense of “equality” when there is in fact no such thing.

        • caved1ver01

Hence, the “equality” myth is just another Marxist utopian fantasy

      • Polly Cy

    • Henry

The trouble is that the “they” who give orders to the police are precisely the same “they” who are cheerleading all the bad behavior.

  • Lucius Severus Pertinax

Chris.. is there a link for this?

  • Capn Jack

Chris, Is this BS, or what?

    • Eh, Wot?

BTW – This url is the most adult thoughtful opinion sites around …. Regular reading is addictive!

    • Capn Jack

Thanks..I checked it out. Hopefully this will get through their thick

  • Mike-SMO

Read?! Giggle. Snort! I bet yoiu used to claim that you read “Playboy” for the literature and philosophy, especially the center-fold.

    Jes’ Sayin’.

But, yes, good hints and links. But I usually refer to those links since the sale is usually hard enough without getting them past images of Sam. Or without me forgetting where I was going before I encountered Sam. Or something.

  • Mike-SMO

P.S. It is, indeed, foolish to blame a machine for doing exactly what it was designed to do. “Jo”, however seems to be self-designing and thus part of the “problem”. That may all be blamed on the original “Designer” who made the machine and software but “Jo” gets a little credit, here.

Is trhere an “idependent” creative subroutine? Where does the original designer end? A “soul” subroutine?

Might explain the thumb-drive port behind my ear.

  • interventor

Jo, you cute Alloy, conservatives don’t blame machines for what happens. Unlike Progs. who imbue machines with will and power. Rather , like the shamans of old. imbued places and things with will and power. Thus, guns cause deaths and crime. Not the POS holding the gun.

    • JTC

      You forgot about “smart” guns.

    • JTC

      I remember that.

And those comments; if we had known then what we know now? After enduring the year straight from hell, maybe we would have gone way beyond questioning as we realized they don’t just “know things”, they create things, one after another and one more destructive than the other, until they achieve the desired result. Which by all appearances they have done.

“America is at a turning point.” Sam/Chris so presciently said then. And what a horrible turn it took.

So what might we have done beyond mere questioning if we had known what awaited us one year ago today?

What might we do from now until 1/1/22 beyond mere questioning and accusing and exposing and proving their intent to destroy us and America?

See you in a year. Maybe.

      • JTC

Well shit, that was two years ago…

I’m a little slow. Or fast. Or something.

Anyway, just double down on what I said above.

  • Old Codger

Don’t know about you folks but I plan to wear my

    Not your president?
    Not my problem
    Trump 2020

shirt and my MAGA hat – A LOT! – for the next 4 years. Will definitely be wearing the hat every time I leave the house. I call it “Trolling for progs.”

    • JTC

Wear your MAGA gear to restaurants and you can call it “poisoned by progs”.

Daughter did her fireworks display last night and the “Trump 45 Epic Shots” as her finale.

I told her that was appropriate, fizzled at the end like the real thing, and the 45th might well have been our final shot.

  • MAJ Arkay

Luckily, it rained buckets all day, so we did not have to stand fire watch out in the cold. Lots of fireworks around us, anyway; we sat inside and looked out the big windows.

Today is a gloriously clear and sunny Texas Hill Country day. I do hope it bodes well for this year, but will still be prepared for whatever.

    • John M.

Foggy and cold at Midnight here, so I sat by the fireplace and used the key fobs to trigger the panic alarms in both cars.

      • Swansonic

  • Pamela

Spent the evening watching Doctor Who episodes. The doors are open with plenty of fresh air flowing through the house. Wish there were some Storm Force Winds running through some state and federal houses to clean out the dross today.

    • JTC

No it’s just yada yada yada…again.

    • cb

C’mon Pam, dontcha know fake news when you see it? /s
