Californians discover their solar panels don’t work when PG&E shuts down the grid

Grid-tied solar works when there’s a grid to tie into. Without a powered-up grid, the systems automatically shut down to avoid dumping current into the utility lines which could backfeed through transformers and possibly electrocute line workers. The inverters also need that 60Hz signal to synchronize with it.

All new homes in Kalifornia must have solar panels starting next year. Cheapest implementation is grid-tied. What happens to the grid when they switch the power back on when it’s sunny and 400,000 rooftop installations start dumping excess energy? Don’t expect them to end blackouts when the Sun is out.

Question for preppers: Should you have off-grid with batteries (silent) or generators (loud, perhaps portable)?

If a person is going off grid or detached from the grid, go with commercial panels and parts. Set the panels to GPS track the sun and have the generated power stored in batteries. A light can show when the grid is back up if you want to reconnect. Problem is I don’t trust the State to not suck every ray of generated power. Then charge you for the generation.

Any time you have solar you should have batteries. You should also have your system set up to charge the batteries first and keep them topped off at all times. If at all practical, you ought also to have wind turbines as well.

If I were trying to live off grid, I would do my best to have all appliances and lighting be DC based as the conversion of DC to AC is horrifically wasteful of power. Pamela’s suggestion about using commercial panels and other parts is sound. Remember also that the average lifespan of most solar panels is only ~ 5 years. There are some very informative videos on YouTube regarding how “green” alternative energy sources truly are.

Actually the guaranteed life is 20 years and they are usually good for 25. I have a 10.4 kw setup in the back yard. It is there because our gov was dumb enough to pay for about 60% of the cost. Anyone that thinks you can run the world on solar in the north east needs to find out about snow. It does however generate most of the electricity we use in a year and we displace propane use with a heat pump.

    • October 12, 2019 at 11:50 am

Home power generation is separated from the “grid” with transfer switches, either manual or automatic.

Here in Fla solar is mostly relegated to water heating and pool heater duty as the probematic maintenance of battery banks is beyond what all but dedicated preppers can or want to deal with. But many of us have standby generators for hurricane outages; some are permanent whole-house systems of 20K watt or so capacity with large buried propane tanks and automatic switching to backup when commercial power goes out, including a sort of backflow preventer so that line-in and line-out are completely separate from the commercial power source. Others (like me) have a fairly large portable unit of about 7000 watts and a manual transfer switch that I flip when I plug in the genset that is tied to the critical circuits for lights, fridge and outlets for the the other necessities by not for the central A/C or water heater so we have a couple of portable room air conditioners. I also bring the motorhome out of storage which provides an additional generator, bedroom, bath, and gas cooking and hot water.

The solar systems that are subsidized (I’m always getting promos from the power company that gov will essentially pay for an installation) are NOT intended to provide you with personal backup power and do not require battery banks because their capacity is only used to augment and pump into the grid system, which explains why the power company is so on board with it. You do NOT get the benefit of that power when the grid is down because as explained by others it is automatically controlled and deactivated when power is out…it is ONLY to benefit the grid system and is NOT a system that preppers for their own benefit would want or use, although as I mentioned there are transfer systems for home solar as well, but the only way that will function is in conjunction with a battery array, and you would then transfer and isolate power sources the same way as with a generator.

I don’t know but I woud bet that the so-called mandated solar installations in Kali and elsewhere gov has its tentacles tightly gripping your personal home and self are ENTIRELY of this latter sort, it may or may not be benefically “green” for the greater good, but it is NOT prep for yourself and your family home and will NOT keep you provided and alive when either the SHTF or gov
s machinations cause commercial disruption as is happening with the intentional outages in Kali right now. I imagine there is quite a bit of confusion about this among many…and that too is a page from the playbook of socialist, elite, and nanny gov. Don’t be fooled.

I’d say that was a good Florida summation.
The solar power connected to the grid is meant to relieve the power companies of spending money building more capacity. Detail escape me as to how they figure the problem of cloudy days capacity reduction. maybe natural gas power stations cover that.
I treated that last hurricane that hit here as a total grid down EMP hit. I can do OK for a while with almost no electricity. No internet can be a good respite.

For alternate power, check legacy foods they have four options, using a solar/house-charged unit that weighs about 22 lbs. You basically
choose how many solar panels you want. They also offer a three-light
solar-charged set up for under $160 USD.

You want a quiet system for tactical purposes. Not just to avoid attracting the zombies, but the live ones coming out of the cities when the services fail.

If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend John Ringo’s ‘The Last Centurion.’

This is somewhat off message I know, but it nevertheless speaks to the class warfare which is an unintended consequence of the delightful woke culture that’s slowly but surely poisoning this country. Maybe not so slowly…

My wife and I were driving home from The Cleveland Clinic yesterday afternoon, when we were accosted by a member of the resistance who apparently felt our “White Privilege” was just too much to bear.

The trip home takes us thru a rundown section of town. We were stopped at a red light in a Chrysler 200 convertible with the top down and the windows up, when one of the colorful local characters–a tall, 250+ pound White man on foot–stopped in his tracks and began admonishing us about our windows. “Hey–roll down your windows!” he demanded loudly several times. “Don’t be afraid to get some dirt in your ears dammit!!” Thinking at first, he was simply making a poor attempt at being funny, we nodded and smiled at him, but then the situation escalated. “Roll down your windows I said, you effin’ White People,” he now screamed at us. “Do you think you’re special? F–k you! Seriously, F–k you!!” Happily, the light changed and we drove on without further incident.

In all fairness, the man appeared to be somewhat deranged and possibly homeless. Nevertheless, he must be getting his propaganda from somewhere, because I guess the sight of two well-dressed, late middle aged white people passing thru the hood in a new convertible with the top down and the windows up was triggering to a habitual loser who has been conditioned to blame White Privilege for his miserable lot in life. God forbid it would ever occur to him to blame himself… And thank God we weren’t wearing MAGA hats!!

For nearly two years now, we have seen countless politically motivated incidents where lowlife thugs assault elderly White People who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The thinking is: ‘well-to-do’ White People have better lives than we do because they’re evil and they keep the rest of us down. Events such as this are now commonplace, so it’s official: The War On White Privilege has been declared!

    Thoughts?

I’m a not-particularly-well-off white guy in my early sixties. Last year I had a new neighbor, African-American, who apparently couldn’t hold onto a job.

So he rides up to me on his bicycle one afternoon, and launches into how I “need” to hire him- to rake leaves or whatever.

As he continued, with me saying nothing, I realized I was looking at the results of his “culture”. His logic was, “you’re white, you own your house, therefore you’re rich, therefore I am entitled to get money from you”.

He finally “ran down” when it became obvious to him that he “wasn’t getting through to me”. He was wrong; I got the message, loud and clear.

I simply suggested he check with Kroger, which was hiring at the time. He apparently did, since he was working there a week later. A week after that, he was gone, also gone from the neighborhood, and I haven’t seen him since.

A few months later, when the state capitol’s police and sheriff’s depts. were shipping their just-released drug incarcerants and busing them down to our new local “halfway house”, we were inundated by said ex-drug cases going door to door demanding “work”. When our local police told the halfway house operators to stop it, the druggies went from back door to back door, so the police couldn’t spot them.

As for the halfway house operators, who were employed to keep control of the “clients”, get them to job interviews, and etc., they spent most of their time in their offices, drinking lattes’ and surfing the internet. I’m guessing mostly PrOn sites.

As for why they were shipping the druggies down here to begin with, most of them were longtime users, seriously brain-fried, and the capitol’s authorities were hoping they were too addled to find their way “back home”. So far, that seems to have been an accurate assessment.

And oh yes; the druggies were, and are, predominantly white.

But like my ex-neighbor, they come from a culture with a fundamentally different worldview. The best way I can describe it is the parable of the grasshopper and the ant. (See The Last Centurion by John Ringo for a recent take on it.)

I am an ant, if a not very powerful one. Most people I know are ants.

These people are grasshoppers- and so are their “facilitators”.

It’s the culture they were raised in -which we are not allowed to criticize, according to the “woke”.

As I have said before, “race” is not destiny, but “culture” damned well is. Politics and religion are part of culture, but they are generally “downstream’ of its origins.

And “culture” is like a computer program. It’s a case of GIGO; Garbage In- Garbage Out.

I would disagree with only one point, eon: religion is upstream of culture.

What you believe about your status in the universe, sin, redemption – they all inform how you view yourself and how you relate to others, as well as how you relate to right and wrong and what those are.

And “I don’t believe in anything” IS a religion, as is “I believe in pure reason.” And they both produce different cultures than the one you grew up in.

I tend to differ. Islam is a religion based on a violent, tribalist, clan-based culture. “I against my brother; my brother and I against my cousin; my brother, my cousin and I against all others.” The culture was that way long before Mohamed was born.

The Judeo-Christian religion is based in Hebrew culture, which is family-based and believes that violence is only to be used in self-defense, and only as a last resort.

Different cultures with diametrically-opposed worldviews, resulting in fundamentally different belief systems.

As for atheism, it became “a thing” when those who wanted to do whatever they wanted, to whoever they wanted, whenever they wanted, realized that if they decided there was no God, there was therefore no afterlife, and no eternal punishment for any wrongs they did to others. So all they had to do was avoid the consequences of their actions during their lifetimes, and they were “home free”. The desire for such a belief system , on purely “utilitarian” grounds , predated the belief system itself.

It did of course copy the Satanist philosophy of “do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law”. It just subtracted the bit about swearing fealty to Old Scratch.

As I’ve said elsewhere, people tend to follow religions, political movements, and etc. that sanctify what they would do anyway, of their own volition. The belief system just lets them feel good about themselves while they’re doing it.

And that is why “culture” is at the root of everything else.

        cheers

No question that a war on “white privilege” has been declared, but I think that the fact that the targets are usually the elderly, women and people who don’t see it coming speaks more to the fact that most pantifa are cowards who operate in areas where they know they won’t be arrested and against people who are easy targets. They have their antecedents in animal rights cowards who used to throw red paint on older women in fur coats instead of leather clad Hell’s Angels.

Don’t have to live in or even drive through lowtone areas to be inflicted with lowtone behavior, as gov is actively bringing them to us by the use of so-called infilling of better-kept areas with subsidized housing. Cheaper land is available for such projects in the existing decrepit areas but that does not serve the agenda which is only marginally about providing affordable housing for the less-advantaged but primarily about sticking it to the “white privileged” (an intentional and misleading dogwhistle as detailed below)…never mind that the “privilege” was attained and earned over a lifetime of hard work and careful choices with never a request or even a thought for subsidy.

Chris has been to my home, decent little town with an older lesser side and a newer nicer side. The road to my house is into the latter, leading to a state park and dotted with nice neighborhoods including mine that is laid out around a golf course. Recently a ten acre tract along that road was bought by some quasi gov agency to build a new subsidized low-income project named after a black former city councilman who was a decent man but searching his name returns a whole column about his 58 year old son who is a multiple felon and regular resident of the county jail, but gotta take our heroes as they come I guess.

Anyway these projects, and we already have a few scattered around, tend to be well-kept in appearance and strictly managed to kick out troublemakers…problem is, the trouble makers stay around and the area soon sees and feels the effects of this magnet of the effects of alcohol, dope, joblessness, and fatherless children…all cultivated and created by the very misguided gov policies and programs they purport to “help”.

It is a social construct that flows downward yes, but it is the where and why of that flow that is troubling and destructive, and that I am convinced is an intentional effort to spread the misery and thereby maintain control even -or especially- among the heretofore self-dependent and productive members of the population…how else to maintain power than to maintain and increase the dependency on the welfare state through bought votes and destruction of any safety and situational separation from it? Getting rid of the vestiges of this uppity “white privilege” -a serious misnomer since my neighborhood has several productive and well off black and other minority families who have worked their way out of shitholes and built a good life for their families that they want to keep separated from those influences, but that does not serve the divisive agenda of leftist gov does it?

Destroying that independence is absolutely high on the agenda of leftists and elites and at the end of the day is our greatest risk in this upcoming election.

Obama and Holder took copies of all of the census data down to the neighborhoods and were going to chase after every mostly “white” neighborhood while the closer for the Globalists was destroying the USA. They planned government injection of housing and rent payments to “improve” these neighborhoods with people who cannot pay the cost of living there.
