As to solar, this is The Fla so plenty of sun to capture and convert…the process with current tech is not perfect or even yet financially feasible, but don’t try telling that to people like my neighbors in this fairly upscale golf course neighborhood where dozens have succumbed to the siren song of “free”, goaded along by constant door knocks, emails, and texts from hustlers selling the dream.

Now for the most part these are pretty conservative folks, against most forms of socialism, but not all when it comes to their own pocketbook, and they get pretty rowdy when told their government tax credits, rebates, subsidies yadayadayada…are welfare. One otherwise intelligent retiree actually telling me it’s the same as taking a standard deduction or other legitimate reduction of taxable income, and he didn’t appreciate me telling him that the (big!) subsidy for his solar system that is handed to him was taken (stolen) from other individuals, not given to him by gov.

A pretty good breakdown evolved in our back and forth on a “neighborhood” discussion site, some pro and some con. As I said harnessing solar esp here in the Sunshine State is worthy and legit, but like everything else by the time vested interests are done manipulating every detail, most especially the money -always follow the money- it’s hard to tell what is a good investment.

So a lot of these folks here have some dough and paid cash for their install. The sales hustlers don’t like that of course as they make most of their profit from various financing and lease schemes, a very close parallel to a new vehicle purchase…they didn’t like hearing that either. But all in all the numbers are similar to this; a 2000sf home needs about 15kw of electric. Each of the newer rooftop solar panels produces about 400w, so 40 panels at approx. 1000.00 each installed, and a completed system costs 40,000.00 (This is without any battery storage or backup capability, this is purely done to reduce draw from the grid, theoretically saving money, and in an outage like the recent himicane, they’re in the dark like everybody else. But proponents claim they have reduced their power bill from 250.00 or so to the base charge that the utility assesses for the tie-in of 30.00. And some say that the so called “net” system will allow them to send their unused solar power into the grid for credit, although none have yet been able to show real numbers for that. So anyway, their 40,000 system cost is reduced by 30% under the benevolent gov’s program, which they brag about until told it is pure socialism and they get a little pissy, but they still take the money and their net cost is 28,000. Then they get into a fair amount of speculation as to actual savings, saying they expect to break even in about seven years by reducing their monthly outgo of 280.00 (250.00 plus the 30.00 base charge) to zero. That 280.00 is 3360.00 yr and 23,520.00 over seven years, and they will tell you that means they are ahead of the game and making a profit which will only increase when they produce more than they use and sell the overage back. True enough on the face of it but you just can’t tell them that 28,000 they pulled out of their whatever retirement acct has a cost that must be figured in. “But I was not getting hardly anything in interest on my savings, so there is no interest cost” they say. Try to tell them about the time-value of money (right now about 6%) and these intelligent people just don’t grok it. But it’s real and that 140.00 (monthly amortization of 28,000 for 84mo.) takes their real cost to 420.00, quite a bit more than they were paying into the grid, not even taking into account any maintenance, repairs, or replacement of components.

And that’s all based on a cash purchase, plus if they want backup, a proper battery bank system jacks the cost another 20,000 or so, about the same installed cost if they go the whole-house stationary genset route with buried 500 gal LP tank.

But most buyers do not or can not pay cash so they are victimized by sales pitches of “no up-front cost and easy payments” over 15-20 years or worse yet a leasing scheme for 25 years, then all financials fly out the window of unknowns and pure speculation. Talk about being pissed when they are told that the seven years mentioned above is probably the max lifespan of the current generation of panels which are leaps and bounds better than the older ones and they will keep paying for a dead system for another decade or two.

All of my back and forth with them was underlaid by this (another irony from *the office of the president*), which was even a surprise to me, a big supporter of both new and old generation of nuclear, and the factor that will obsolete all of this ignorant crap (but won’t keep them from pushing it to serve their own money/control-motivated agenda which is totally irrelevant to actual viability or the best interest of citizens)…

        https://www.whitehouse.gov/ostp/news-updates/2022/06/03/parallel-processing-the-path-to-commercialization-of-fusion-energy/

Nuclear fusion as I’ve said before is one of the three primary legs of the New Industrial Revolution that will usher in the next phase of American Exceptionalism and a productive future beyond anything we have done or imagined before. I won’t be slapping a bunch of those ugly-ass panels on my roof on the altar of false and evil green promises, and I probably won’t live to see what fusion will do for my children’s generation, but I do feel better for their future knowing it will come, …unless we allow it to be killed by brain-dead and evil actors who seek to prevent and/or destroy anything that bodes well for the future of America and Americans…and in the near term that means maximizing the assets and resources God gave us; coal, oil, and gas.

Florida at least can support the whole premise of solar power generation and those that have the werewithal to pay out of pocket can enjoy and entertain themselves with false profit and the self-delusion of saving the planet, while those who succumb to the siren song of “no money down and easy payments” will suffer the consequences of lies and avarice.

How’s that worked for Germany? France? Denmark or Japan?
Costs in materiel and energy to start and maintain, plus petroleum products needed to run them.
Not one wind farm has broken net costs to produce them and maintain them functional enough to provide energy to grid.
It’s something that they can point to as a totem to worship. Look It’s clean. No smoke. Except at the factories that make them. Unseen and far aways.
No smoke and oil until failure and then it’s pretty spectacular.
The lifespan of a turbine is damn short. It will never cover its costs of manufacturing, maintenance, disposal, and replacement.

Read somewhere on the vast wasteland of the internet last week that Germany was tearing down a wind farm to mine for coal under it. Noted that they needed coal power for this winter more than ‘maybe’ wind electricity.

“The lifespan of a turbine is damn short.”

They supposedly have a service life of between 20 and 25 years. They tend to last less than 15 and require a lot more maintenance than manufacturers claim. This is particularly so for off-shore wind turbines. The maintenance of off-shore wind turbines cost lot more because of the need to use service ships and increased maintenance due to the hostile operating conditions.

This means law enforcement will be entirely in the hands of the Democrats and they will have to take all of the blame for any “summer of love” activities they generate.
Every aspect of the Woke must be thoroughly exposed and acted on before we can regenerate the Republic.
The first and foremost lesson that must be made clear to every citizen is that Socialism Is a Scam, always has been, and always will be.
It’s going to be an uphill battle.
Even the most “well educated” and intelligent people, even some that I admire, have no concept of the Natural Rights the Founders and Framers alluded to because they were educated by the Worshipers of the State.

Assuming wide spread “mail-in voting” is appropriate (and I don’t concede that), the simple fact of the matter is voting day is known years in advance. Therefore it should be incumbent on who wish to vote via mail in ballot to do so far enough in advance of voting day to ensure the ballots are certified & counted before voting day. Any received late should be ignored like a voter showing up at the polling station a day late.

That’s one reason why mail-in voting isn’t used here in New Hampshire – too much ability to commit voter fraud.

Now if we could get our state legislature to close the hole in NH election law that allows non-residents to vote in our elections, and in a few cases, to run for elective office.

Two different students attending Dartmouth College have run for seats in the NH House. One was actually elected even though his legal residence was in Thousand Oaks, California. The one who ran in the recent state primary for the chance to run for a NH House seat – and lost – is a resident of Connecticut. Both used their college addresses to run for office, yet they weren’t legal residents of New Hampshire.

I voted to keep all the sitting Judges in no matter their politics. Keeping a known quantity in office is better than having Gruesome appointing his hand picked creatures. He’ll be gone before they are up again.
