  • Pamela

There will be hell to pay for this.

Whoever shot Jan will die painfully.

    Hide the kids.

    • Lucius Severus Pertinax

      WTF!!! WT F-ing FUCK????

  • Bill M

    Holy crap!

  • Mogrith

    WTF!

Looks like this could mean war

  • JanB

    Marcia! Marcia! Marcia!

  • Grunt GI

    WTF is going on!?

  • Kathleen

Isn’t that a rope hung chair? Did the rope fray and give way or was it something else? Please don’t kill or her off, Chris.

    • GWB

There was a gunshot. First panel.
Small bit of blood on her chest. Second panel.

      • Wyrmlaf

Large pool of blood under her…

      • meistergedanken

Yeah, and large pool of blood beneath her!

      • PaulS

And a pool of blood under her?!!!! What the hell?
        (does she have six toes?)

        • Gary-In-Phx

          Polydactyl like the Hemmingway cats?

        • Old Codger

Jan gets shot and you’re COUNTING TOES?!?!?!

  • Dear Lord….

  • Bill G

    Hell. To. Pay.

  • epilitimus

My first thought was her iPad exploded, but that is the iPhone, And then there is the pool of blood (or red throw rug?) and what appears to be a spot of blood between her nearly perfect breasts. I am puzzled how the blood gets from between her breasts to the floor, unless it went all the way through in which case…

    • Interventor

      Reports of IPhone 7 exploding.

      • B Woodman

That’s the Samsung Notepad 7 that’s been exploding its batteries.
But they do have the same one piece, batteries not removable, construction.

        • It was in the air, intact. It wasn’t the phone.

        • Interventor

No, IPHONE 7 reported exploding in China.

    • MasterDiver

Exit wound in her back. If it was a hollow-point it’s gonna be messy. Control the bleeding ASAP!

      Zar Belk!

    • mrob

      I’m thinking left shoulder.

      • Gus Bailey

That does appear to be what Chris drew.

  • Someone’s going to die, but I don’t think it’s Jan. Don’t keep us in suspense too long on this…

  • WayneM

Intellectually, I know this is a cartoon, albeit my favourite webtoon… (sorry, Chris… Bill Watterson’s Calvin & Hobbes is still Numero Uno in print) but when I saw this strip, I had a visceral reaction… and, from reading the comments, I wasn’t the only one.

    Burying Wade was hard enough…

    • Subotai Bahadur

I think our visceral reaction is based on the fact that we all expect the enemy to push things to open war. And we also expect that we will deal with that new reality. Merriam’s Corner can be anywhere.

      • And Merriam’s Corner is right…over…there.

  • eon

She was sitting outside, and nobody there is stupid enough to point a weapon at the house.

Either an idiot “hunter”, or deliberate by someone else who doesn’t belong there.

Either way, they will soon wish they had never been born.

    clear ether

    eon

    • There are other possibilities – an illegal trying to sneak by or a homeland agent trying to start things or getting revenge. There are lots of possibilities.

    • Nomde Plume

That looks like an open bathroom door in the background, are you sure Jan’s outside?

  • Subotai Bahadur

100 heads, at least, and as a start.

  • eclark1849

Oh my god! They shot Jan! YOU BASTARDS!

    • Tennessee Budd

Oh, bravo zulu, Mr. Clark! Or Miss, Mrs., as the case may be. I assumed “Mister”.
Whether you’re male or female, you made me grin.

      • Nomede Plume

It’s not the iWhatever exploding, there’s blood spray behind Jan in the first frame. And, WTF.

        • Bingo on the spotting.

  • Scott Connors

Cartel? Jihadists? Whatever–I hope that Zed has a backhoe.

  • Beaches

Not sure how I like this. Can we go back to the topless bar?

  • B Woodman

Five different scenerios running, none of them end well . . . especially for the shooter et al. Play time is over, prepping time is done. Ya comes to the dance with what ya got.

    • Welcome to the next level… ready or not, here we go.

  • hbbill

HOLY CRAP!!!! If that line under the BANG indicates the path of the bullet, and that may well be the case given the little bit of red on her chest in the next panel, we could be looking at a hit on the sub-clavian artery. Not good.

    • RegT

True story. If I remember my A&P, the subclavian is one of the fastest bleeders in the body, next to the femoral artery and the aorta.

      • PaulS

May as well slip the brachial in too, basically any arterial bleed = BAD.

        MEDIC!

  • Heltau

Why did you go and do that for?

  • Shonkin

@ epilitimus: That’s a big-ass pool of blood, not a throw rug, which means a big exit wound on her back. Not good.
    Hunting round or dumdum.

  • Sam

Oh crap! Why did I have to read this tonight? Why couldn’t I have waited till tomorrow?

Somebody is in deep, deep kimchi.

  • JTC

Dude. If you had to croak a prog…

  • Nomde Plume

In first-aid training the instructor (military background as I recall) would sneak in (2? quarts) of blood red water, whatever you could lose and still survive, and unannounced just dump it on a prone body, just to get us used to ignoring the quantity and get to work. So maybe she’s not dead. Unconscious. Wounded. Bleeding. Alive.

  • So this is how the Old Bat rewards her followers?

    • Well, yeah.

    • MasterDiver

      just Google “Clinton Body Count”

      Zar Belk!

      • Or “Arkancide”.

  • Oh. Shit. WTF?

    • Some motherfu(*er is gonna pay.

  • Tim Moyer

WTF? This shook me worse than the charger roll-over. I hope this gets resolved fast. Retribution from Tabasco? A DDQ patron gone off the rails? Black Lives Matter pissed at Damon? Somebody’s gonna pay for this!

    • Crotalus

Sure it isn’t a government thug?

  • Cliff

Who would shoot Jan, a random driveby???????

    • B Woodman

Someone had to deliberately find and drive to the DD to do this. The DD is not on a public road, far from it. Nothing random about the shooting.

  • Hardball

Bad guys, enemies, or ND (kids find gun out?)

    • Sam

None of the DD kids. Their parents don’t leave guns laying around.

      • GWB

And the kids that can reach them have been trained on safety.

  • JohninMd.(Help!?!!)

GET THE DRONE UP! THIS ONE ISNT GETTING OFF THE RANCH ALIVE.

  • JohninMd.(Help!?!!)

Wait… The last bunch to start shit, when Tabasco tore up the Black Lives Matter bunch…the only crazies who would kill over shit THEY started, the white wife (in their eyes) of a black man… If Zed and Damon don’t get them, Don Diego WILL…..

  • JohninMd.(Help!?!!)

    Javier’s “dogs” out? Oh, God…… No, Jav…..

  • NotYetInACamp

I had a reaction on seeing the situation. I went into an alert and orient mode, then backed down.
I did not wish to make the first comment.
Considering that the pad she was holding may be Javier’s, her child, and the past hacking and control used from that pad has been shown to be considerable, there are people who might be able to locate the pad. Getting close is no longer difficult as there is a business going on. Triangulation, use of the home’s appliances, looking through the walls, and other means could be used to locate the pad. Then putting a projectile into the person holding it would not be difficult for some.
All in all it’s above my skill set. Now who has a dead list that keeps growing and a Dixie Mafia said to be at her beck and call?
At one time in my life I would have said that my speculation is complete fantasy. Snuffing out skills that some consider child’s play is directed at stopping what is neither. Things are happening now that they can only be considered and attempt to flood and numb Americans as part of the diversion from the asymmetric invasion.

    My simple response is wtf.

    • Nomede Plume

Very bingo on targeting the pad. And ‘intelligent’ robotic assaults have their own ‘fog of (electrons) war’ so by mistake, mom, not son, got hit. Still, this act can be traced. So… this isn’t a dream sequence? We’re all worked up out here, you know, Chris.

  • Wood

    Nightmare dream sequence?

    • Chris Muir

      heh

      • JTC

Heh yourself…cui (cartooning under influence) again?

        • JTC

But one thing’s for sure, lotta eyeballs here this eve. 🙂

  • Brasspounder

    Not good. At. All.

  • Donald Dunlap

Day By Day is my first stop every AM. This was one Hell of a way to start my morning

  • GWB

Maybe Chris is going GRRM* on us?

(* the guy who wrote Game of Thrones)

  • MasterDiver

Whoever did this should die slowly, hopelessly, in a manner that would make the adepts of the Spanish Inquisition, nay, even the Overlords of Delgon swoon in envious admiration. Their nervous systems should be traced with such stimulation that maintains such excruciatingly exquisite agony that they would welcome the sweet mercy of mere pain. Finally, their bodies will be dismembered and disposed of so thoroughly, that not a single meson will be found within a parsec of another.

Thus the fate of those that would harm those I love and cherish!

    Zar Belk!

  • Gary-In-Phx

Perhaps this is the final (albeit painful) push needed to get Jan to let go of her liberal ways? She’s been moving more conservative for some time.

  • Unca Walt

    Oh dear.

  • Gus Bailey

  • Pamela

Naomi needs to triage and render medical aid to Jan.
Someone needs to call Don P and Tucker.
Zed needs to make a call to some old friends of the family.
Secure the kids and the perimeter.
This will not end well all the way up the line to whoever gave the order.

One law I learned growing up is that no one messes with family.

  • Glenn

Looks more like a hit in the shoulder than the chest. Still can bleed a lot, not to mention the orthopedic issues….the shoulder is probably the least stable joint in the human body.

Direct pressure, pack the wound if you have the skills and the kit, start an IV asap, then medivac. ‘Tolly should be spooling up the ranch’s bird now and f%^& anyone who makes an issue of him setting down on the rooftop helipad of the nearest trauma center.

Also, when Jan’s genius son figures out who did this…..can you imagine when the “Internet of Things” all start actively trying to kill you?

  • StupidShouldHurt

Call Toly and the chopper up.

  • No-o-o-o-o-o-o! Chris, worked ER way too long to see much hope here. C’mon, man, I’m really hoping the guys have medic training.

  • Spin Drift

First, WTF, Second why Jan? Third, flat trajectory, either they were close or its a very fast round. (22-250 at 4000 fps). Fourth, the perps have opened the Seven Levels of Revenge:

    1) Pissed
    2) Pissed Off
    3) Pit Bull
    4) Medieval
    5) Spanish Inquisition
    6) Extreme Prejudice
    7) Full Sicilian

    Spin
    Show them the Instruments

P.S. For a reference point, Tabasco stomping them would only be the Pissed Off level

    • Pamela

At what number can I bring out the skinning knives?

      • Sendarius

A cheese grater is easier – messier, but easier.

        Or so I have heard.

      • Solaratov

        Four would seem about right.

      • jetfxr69

        I believe that’s level 4, Medieval.

        • Pamela

I was thinking more of going all Mohawk on it with blades of grass.

          • NotYetInACamp

Mohawks, I believe, were one of the inhabitants of this continent who use flaying and muscle removal to test how brave a captured warrior was. His endurance showed his bravery. Screaming and blubbering was insulting to the captured warrior.
One tidbit from reading contemporary source books from Pre-Revolutionary War America.
Muslims used similar as a means on intimidating and insulting their enemies. After victory at the Battle of Cyprus in 1571 Lala Mustafa had the surrendered Venetian commander Bragadin mutilated and flayed alive, while his companions were executed. Bragadin’s skin was then paraded around the island, before being sent to Constantinople

          • Pamela

            NYIAC

The Seneca could give lessons in dealing with enemies that would make you run for cover.
Some things are better accomplished clear eyed and sober.

          • NotYetInACamp

Seneca. Yes. Other early inhabitants of this continental land mass. (The Irish, Vikings, and others were here at times, I say.)
The concept of a peaceful Indian prior to Europeans arriving in droves is a myth created for political reasons. There was considerable written back then of what was happening. Blood curling is another way to put it with running for cover being a wise response. Clear eyed handling of a matter is the best way.

          • MasterDiver

They let the women do it:
When the early Jesuit fathers preached to Hurons and Choctaws,
They prayed to be delivered from the vengeance of the squaws.
‘Twas the women, not the warriors, turned those stark enthusiasts pale.
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.

            Zar Belk!

      • sigofmugmort

Pamela: #5 as the Inquisition tried to perfect skinning alive

        • Pamela

Unfortunately some of my people had that done for not fitting in.
Were the main event for an Auto Da Fe for not recanting according to family lore.

I wonder if the Hildebeast will bring that back if she were to come to power.

  • Crotalus

Time at last for Zed to go hunting.

  • Interventor

    Level 8 Full ISIS.

  • Susie Schroeder

    What the heck? BLM rioters?

    • Solaratov

That’s what I was thinking, too. Payback for Tabasco’s fun.
They just have to get payback for what they started and
      their own stupidity.

If so, they ain’t seen payback yet…and they ain’t gonna like it.

  • John Trauger

    I didn’t think Jan knew the Clintons…

    Shot through the heart
    And you’re to blame
    You give love
    A bad name (bad name)

  • grayjohn

    Shoulder wound.

    • Gary-In-Phx

Will it really matter once the alarm is sounded? There are a few residents on the ranch that are very skilled in the riotous application of violence.

  • Solaratov

Damn! I hate starting my day off with something like this.

I know. I know. It’s a ‘toon….but they are like the Texas family I never had.

    • Pamela

Family is Family. By blood or by choice.
You stand together even when there are some members that need a case of whupass delivered to straighten them out, or if one or two need strangling on a regular basis.

Better a ‘toon than real time life.

  • Gina

Violence of biblical proportions is about to rain down on they who so richly deserve it.

  • Jess Sain

4 weeks vacation per year, .308 bull barrel with ACOG & a .300 whisper w/thunderbeast can. Free on site volunteer protection. This would be my idea of an ideal vacation. Someday, I’ll have the fleer and can do the night shift.

  • Old Codger

    WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!????

  • Spin Drift

The “Full Sicilian” starts with forcing the perp to watch every speech that Hillary has ever given, then Obongo’s and the Mooch. Think “Clockwork Orange.” It gets interesting from there.

    Spin
    Pass the Visine

  • Old Codger

    Nightmare scenario:
    HRC 2017 – 2025
    Michelle Obama 2025 – 2033
    Chelsie Clinton 2033 – 2041
    Malia Obama 2041 – 2049
    Sasha Obama 2049 – 2057

    • JTC

If there is an HRC 2017 there will be no 2025, might not even be a 2018.

    • KenH

All those “people” you list would be LONG dead in the resulting Civil War…

  • Evan3457

I know this cartoon is supposed to reflect reality in many ways, but this is a tough one to take.

    • Pamela

Losing one of your own is always tough to take.
It’s worse when it is done by someone who has sworn an oath to uphold the law; or by person or persons unknown that were caught and released by orders from on high.

  • grayjohn

Zed or Javier? Or both? Ethier way the vengeance will be epic.

  • Really, a low blow indeed. But I think CM has a surprise up his sleeve.

Oh, while I’m at it, all of you do know that you CAN turn off that GPS thingy, right? Oh, I know, I know – the pohlease can still find you. But if it isn’t on you or you have no tablet/pad/smartassphone, how can you be traced?
And burn phones on a pay-as-you go can be a nice bonus. Hide in plain sight. If you do it right, you can be 10 feet from them and the NEVER see you. You just have to out think them… or should I say, out-clever them?

  • don in ak

Wish I could be a part of this hunt.

  • Little-Acorn

If the white line in the first panel marked the path of the bullet, it didn’t hit her heart or lungs. Looks to me like it tore up some muscles and maybe broke the left scapula. But there’s some major arteries and veins in that area, aren’t there? I’m not a doctor. And there is one HELL of a lot of blood under her in the last panel. Somebody better get to her real fast.

  • Red Headed Stranger

His name was Remo and he was in town to do a favor for an old friend.
