The Russian Army tried hunting Finnish sniper Simo Hayha with artillery. They kept failing to kill him; he kept succeeding in killing Russian officers.

As he put it, mostly, the artillery told him how much the Russians feared him.

By the ratio of shots taken to casualties / kills inflicted, sure, snipers rule. But for sheer numbers of casualties / kills, from the 20th century on, you could legitimately conclude that every other branch of the ground forces exists to find targets for the artillery.

I will always have a warm spot in my heart for Dual Purpose Improved Conventional Munitions (DPICM). And the 16″ naval guns of USS New Jersey hurling 11 “Volkswagens” into the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon was a glorious sight.

Artillery got a head start, and may still lead among ground forces, but I am fairly certain that after World War II, and especially after the atomic bombs, air dropped/fired munitions are in first place for the number of casualties/kills.

I was thinking much the same thing. An armor piercing .50BMG round can do a right nice imitation of a cannon. Certainly put paid to anything NFAC Austin is likely to possess. I’ve read that MRAPs, while protective of occupants, have their running gear somewhat exposed. I’ve also heard that they have difficulty going over obstacles as big as the diameter of a telephone pole. It would seem to me that all would be needed to stop one would be a telephone pole across the road and a couple of well placed shots to the differentials. If the shots to the running gear were followed up quickly with paintball strikes to the windows, it would appear to completely render the vehicle inoperative and its inhabitants blind.

I actually have one. 14-inches long, 1-inch by 10-inch bore. Been in the family for at least 250 years. Was originally a trade boat swivel gun. Loaded with 20 musket balls, it was definitely a street sweeper. It can throw a c-cell battery half a mile using a tea-bag sized black powder charge. Put in a tube of BB shot and it will make a nice Claymore.

Actually “Dragon’s Breath” shells are not loaded with magnesium. They’re loaded with “Misch Metal”…..basically cigarette lighter flints. I have several boxes of them and took a couple apart to see what made ’em work. Very simply, instead of shot, dump a load of mischmetal into the shot cup (wad) but first drill 3 or so 1/16th in holes in the bottom of the cup to allow the hot gasses from the burning powder to reach the load. That’s what ignites it.

As an experiment, take a flint from either a refill pack or out of an old lighter, hold it with a pair of needle nose pliers, heat it with either a small torch or one of those micro blowtorches used for light soldering or lighting a cigar. When the ‘flint’ starts to glow, toss it on the floor and watch the reaction.

They melt quickly, so be on your toes.

        Voila……”Dragon’s Breath”

Thank you, thank you, “The Professor” will be here all week. *Evil chuckle/grin*

Probably horridus, (Timber or Canebrake) or adamanteus. (Eastern Diamondback). Those are the first rattlesnakes the colonists encountered, and the likely inspiration for the various “Don’t tread on me” rattlesnake flags of the War for Independence, to which my name also refers.

Love the reference to the Gadsden flag.

Not having any exposure to pit vipers before they arrived, the first colonists were extremely susceptible to snakebites as well as to poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac, for the same reason. It is also why 90% of the deadliest species of anything are in Australia, because most of the world’s population has not encountered them and has not developed any genetic immunity.

The Timber Rattlesnake is endangered where I live, but there is no shortage of Copperheads (Agkistrodon contortrix) and Cottonmouths (Agkistrodon piscivorous).

I have a fair amount of formal and field education on snakes. I might have survived on one or two of them pickled or fried (and no, they don’t really taste like chicken, without a LOT of seasoning), but I don’t keep them as pets.

Other than sharing a fighting position with them, I’m pretty much live and let live with the non-venomous varieties, as they keep the rodent population down. The venomous ones are designated “hostile” on sight and dealt with appropriately.

Kudos to whomever caught the Panamint rattlesnake. They and the Mojave seem to have perfected the ambush. I understand that it is becoming more common for rattlesnakes not to rattle as their biggest threats are now humans, and not getting stomped by buffalo and other large animals.

Still, I wonder if the Panamint and Mojave ever rattle. They do a better imitation of a Copperhead than the Copperhead.
