You can bet it’s guns going into “the right’s” hands and not going into the “wrong” hands that they are so worried about…

Don’t forget the ammo, mags… and training.

Yes, CF. Training and that doesn’t mean the husband, boyfriend or some guy at the gun range. You need a person who can see the problems, correct the problems and create a training program.

Two instructors, one a champion and the other who taught air marshals. The air marshal instructor was more patient and knew how to react to problems.

Get good training before losing money on range fees and ammunition.

After we first came to Texas, 9 years ago, one of the first things my husband and I decided to do was buy a gun for each of us; the second was to find someone qualified to teach us how to use them safely. It turned out that one of the gun store employees was the police chief of our neighboring small town, and we talked to him.

He sat us down and gave us our first lessons. After that he pointed us to a class for acquiring a license to carry, so we took that.

That was 8 years ago. Since, Texas has enshrined constitutional carry into law, but it turns out there are still advantages to having that license, so we’ve still got them, and both of us have become practiced and competent shooters.

Actually, I recommend the opposite. First take a class and learn to shoot, *then* buy your firearms. You’ll make a better-informed selection.

Larry, you know how you make the best decision on the best gun for you? Go through 2 or 3 or 10 different ones, they are all good, but feel them out, how they hold, how they hang, how they feel, everything. You will learn a lot about different guns and which is best and why, and why what is best for one job is not best for another. So, ya know, ya might wanna actually keep several that work well for you and what you want them to do. And then sell off the others that were not right for you, and buy something else and try that out too!

And the above is exactly what we are in the process of losing with this new illegal administrative lawmaking…what I have always called the National Private Armory (the NPA) consists of an inventory of over 300 million guns of every description, all available to you as a legal American citizen to buy, sell, trade and collect, all under the *historical codified law* exempting private sales from the reach and control of fedgov, and all under private, non-trackable, non-traceable, status in the hands of free men exercising their Constitutional right to arm themselves against aggressor…including if need be, their own gov.

    Advantages and disadvantages Nancy…

I’m glad you lucked into a LEO who knew to tell you to get training; most cops are terrible with firearms and tend to give (bad) advice anyway.

Whoever you trainer may be, if they don’t teach first and foremost about SA, Situational Awareness, go ahead and walk out, because without that rule about controlling your location and surroundings, nothing else matters.

That shootin’ iron is last ditch, be ready and use it if you have to, but break your neck to not have to, retreat-retreat-retreat!

I’ve learned a lot about guns in the years since I got my first training, and I wouldn’t be without one now. (By the way, I’m a better shot than my husband). I do, however, hope that I never have to use one.

The Chief of Police who trained us is still around, but he’s a sheriff’s deputy now. We met him in the supermarket the other day.

I was a junior in High School when I bought my first rifle — a Winchester Mod 64. That was in California in 1955. Private sale. I still have it. That was the beginning of a long relationship with firearms, continuing through today. Training was 25 years carrying concealed for the AF, training/qualifying every 3months.

Of course, up until 1968, all gun sales were “private sales.” The .22 I got under the Christmas tree when I was 11 legally has no serial number.

Mine either, Christmas ’64, I was ten. My older brother liked it so much he took his Christmas money to nearby Clewiston and picked up an identical Marlin single-shot to mine which ate up $15 and a box each of s, l, and lr and walked out with it, all by his 12 year old self. And shocker, neither one of us ever shot up anybody or anything except the unlucky critters who populated the sugar cane fields where we grew up learning about life (and guns) from Daddy.

After 65+ years of buying, trading and building guns, I have more than I’ll ever be able to shoot. I donate a custom built rifle, complete with scope, hard case, cleaning kit and ammo, to my local VFW for their annual raffle. They always sell a LOT of tickets to people hoping to win that gun!
