When I was finally able to move out west, I learned things about this area of the country that aren’t mentioned in schoolbooks. One of the most interesting is how the towns out this way were founded. The first two things *every* locality out here had to offer before it started to become considered a town in the mind of the locals were a saloon and a church — and in no particular order. Once it had those two things, the rest of the town grew organically around them.
Flash forward to the 21st Century, and notice that many municipalities have declared bars and churches “nonessential establishments,” to be closed For The Duration. Funny, but that’s precisely the opposite of what our own history unambiguously teaches us. I’m thinking it’s going to turn around and bite these places badly.
With all due respect, Henry, I think you’re missing a vital point. No one is banning the reason WHY those two establishments are essential. You can do both quite well and just as easily and SAFER in your own home. In fact, churches and saloons were just where these two types of people congregated. But you learned and followed the tenets of both at HOME.
Yeah, it’s become serious enough that the pope is now not just a socialist, but a protestant.
Don’t forget the cat house…Every, and I mean every, saloon had cribs for female entertainment.
Hookers and Booze on Saturday Night, then sitting in the Pew for Sunday Morning Church Services looking innocent as a Lamb.
Reminds me of a poem I heard years ago.
Mr. Smith goes to church
he never misses a Sunday
Mr. Smith burns in hell
for what he does on Monday
“Those Christians…. They sow their wild oats on Saturday night and then go to church on Sunday morning and pray for a crop failure” – The Grapes of Wrath….
Or having a real reason for getting religion.
Sowing Wild Oats on Saturday.
Praying for crop failure on Sunday.
“Those Christians…. They sow their wild oats on Saturday night and then go to church a Sunday morning and pray for a crop failure” – The Grapes of Wrath….
On Friday and Saturday night young men sow their wild oats.
On Sunday they pray for crop failure….
What they didn’t count on was Americans saying: “Here, hold my beer, we got this.”
To paraphrase Admiral Yamamoto, they have awakened a sleeping giant.
When this is over we reclaim our Constitutional Liberties, and exact justice from the godless, communist, Chinese bastards who caused this.
What I am worried about is that the Chi-Coms will figure out that many Americans will stop buying their products, even if they are cheaper. Their economy can not take that loss of revenue. Then what will they do?
What China has done throughout its history. Go to war against its neighbors to exact tribute. See “Chinese treasure fleets”.
But, eon, you overlook one important fact. China has no real capacity to project force much beyond its own borders. Yes, China’s pattern has been to “[G]o to war against its neighbors to exact tribute. ” But WE are not China’s neighbors. Oh, they could very likely invade Hawaii – doubtless to be welcomed with open arms by the DemonKKKRats who run it – but they know damned well what would happen should they try to invade the U.S. homeland. There’s a quote attributed to IJN Admiral Yamamoto which would apply in such a scenario.
Is that the one about,” a rifle behind every blade of grass”.?
Invading Hawaii with their current navy would be a logistics nightmare.
Traditionally, and this is often overlooked, China goes to war against itself.
And the factions are often numerous.
The Chinese Communist Party only numbers about 100 million. Even with the backing of the PLA and the world’s largest police force it will be an uphill battle.
When this is over we reclaim our Constitutional Liberties,
The problem is that we won’t reclaim them. Look at all we lost after 9/11. How much of what we lost THEN have we gotten back? In light of the liberties lost then, why would you suppose that the aftermath of the present distress would be any different?
+2 to O.G. The really, REALLY depressing thing about this episode is how quickly and quietly everyone just went along with the most stringent abridgements of civil liberties since the Civil War. Freedom of assembly? Feh. Freedom of religion? Not if The Powers That Be say “stay home.” Seizure of property without due process of law? What else to call executive edicts depriving you of exercising your chosen profession to earn income? Right to bear arms? Just try buying a gun in Cali, Jersey, Noo Yawk or Connecticut right now. Or even ammo in many places. Freedom of movement? Fuhgeddabowdit. You can’t even walk outside in many places, let alone travel interstate at will. LA, NY, DC, MD have emptied the jails of actual criminals in order to be able to jail Americans who dare to go walking outside in defiance of the Gubernatorial edicts. The Government didn’t need to call out the National Guard, let alone worry about its loyalty.
The Coronavirus episode will likely peter out, with a distressing but not at all remarkable number of deaths for an epidemic. The larger Chinese Disease, Totalitarianism, is a far greater threat, and well-established here. I genuinely fear we have crossed that Rubicon, and quietly allowed the Government to burn the bridge behind us.
Fools and their money are soon parted. The varmints have been picking our pockets for far too long. Turn the Auditors loose upon all of the agencies and critters.
I’m a fan of auditors so long as they’re independent, not bureaucrats. Anyone whose full-time job is government work has an incentive to NOT find substantial problems.
If anyone wants to take the government cheese, they should be held accountable for such. This is especially true for groups like colleges, arts centres & suchlike.
When I was working, I was the person that would get handed a Contract/Program to Audit and Clean Up. Pissed off many people except the Clients. It did not matter who yelled, screamed and stamped their feet. There were some Clients/Managers that would request that I handled their Project/Contract. What gets me is Government will go after Companies for the least little thing when the Government is guilty of far worse when the diversion of FUNDS (Tax Payer $$$$$) gets used for Boob Jobs, Face Lifts, Botox, Vacations with Hookers and Blow, Etc.)
A good Auditor is with their weight in gold. Even a mediocre auditor can help a business to markedly improve their processes… but government auditors… not so much.
I work in government and although procurement isn’t a major part of my job, I do enough to see how the processes get turned upside down to meet the letter of the law as opposed to the spirit. When audited, they suggest little changes that never address that.
At least one church around here is holding services in the parking lot, with the preacher on the church roof and the parishioners sitting in their cars. It would be best if they have room to leave an empty space between each pair of cars, but even a packed parking lot provides considerably wider spacing then the pews.
Even a small church in a small mall has found the wonders of broadcasting Sunday Services over the internet. No muss. No fuss.
If they have to gather to have church, they could do it virtually by livestreaming on YouTube and have the reverend give his sermon online.
This nothing new: they did the same thing with radio, and finally tv.
I politely but firmly disagree. Perhaps the most essential part of the Mass, for me at least, is the celebration of it with other people. The coming together to have that communal supper of the Body and Blood of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. And I find quite important and evocative the sharing of the sign of peace — literally reaching out and touching people you do not know, who may be of totally different backgrounds and ethnic origins, who may be of utterly different opinions from you, who nonetheless come together for the common purposes of peace and Communion. I would rather wear surgical gloves, masks, and douse my hands and face with disinfectant, BUT GO, rather than treat the Greatest Feast of all as a TV dinner. And I am steaming mad that the Government has taken that away from me, and steaming mad that the people so readily accept it.
What you are citing in essence is a complaint that started to manifest way back before WWI. The automobile started driving us apart socially and the Internet has only amplified the problem.
I don’t know how to remedy this state of affairs short of an out-and-out means of creating a Virtual Personal Presence to restore something resembling human contact or the near total destruction of civilization as we know it that would drive the remnants of humanity back together.
And the latter would result in a devastation greater than any known in human history leaving only a tiny fraction of us surviving.
Yep. We’re being played for April Fools. And May Fools, June Fools, July Fools,……..
About the only good thing that I can think of that comes from China (supposedly) is this, “May you be cursed to live in interesting times”.
This should serve as a wake up call. No airline solvency is worth allowing travel back to the US during a developing pandemic. Trump should have grounded them immediately.
Also, we should allow no other nation to be the source of things we must have, be that medicines, medical devices, arms, etc. We should be self sufficient.
we should allow no other nation to be the source of things we must have . . . We should be self sufficient.
I suspect that goal of the globalist banksters was accomplished through the tax system. To make it profitable to make those things here once more there would have to be a MAJOR revision to the tax code. I personally do not trust the people who would have to make said revision since they’re the very ones who got us into the situation we’re in today. It’d take truckloads of rope and cities worth of lamp posts to clean house sufficiently to get that done. But we DO need to change the tax code to incentivise domestic production. We NEED to be mostly self sufficient. Trade is great but having to depend upon trading partners for necessities is a recipe for disaster – or even national suicide.
It looks in the first panel like Sam has puled down the top of her dress. It’s a shame she’s leaning on her arms like that.
Here we are discussing an epidemic of death and the abridgement of Constitutional rights, and you’re looking at boobs.
Gotta like your priorities.
I am a little concerned that some of our mayors and governors will fall in love with the dictatorial powers they have spawned.
They might need a whiff of grape to realize we are not all fools all the time.
I am always aware that Lincoln deliberately left unstated that a politician’s skill depends on Fooling Enough of the People Enough of the Time.
I am not worried so much about the temporary powers City, County and State have spawned to cause us to submit to their wishes. They are much easier, when this CCP virus has passed to overthrow. I am worried that the Federal powers invoked will be not so easy and that the money printed to keep the natural processes of capitalism from happening will bring us closer to the socialism/communism I dread. Does anyone not remember what our government did between 1973 and 1975 to allow the fall of S. Vietnam? We were focused on something else while the Fed lined their pockets. The only reason the Dems are screaming the ‘stimulus’ is not enough is because they want more money to hide in their money accounts (which like the healthcare they have is untouchable)
Could it possibly be that China pulled a ‘Pearl Harbor’ on us? Biological warfare. I wouldn’t put it past them.
My initial thought was that they were beta-testing a new bio-weapon. I am no way a conspiracy theorist, however, your idea could be well worth a closer look . . .
Whether Mao’s heirs released it intentionally or not (guessing not, kinda) it’s undeniable the bug was embraced by the Left as a means to behead the Trump economy. There is no possible way that was a coincidence, as 1. all their other criminal plots (Russia, Ukraine) to topple the president failed 2. the economy was going gangbusters in an election year 3. minorities were defecting in record numbers away from (D) 4. MAGA rallies were bigger, better than ever 5. the Trump agenda was succeeding wildly on multiple fronts and 6 . Biden turns out to be a dementia patient.
If you were a top-tier TDS-infected Democrat in that position in February, wouldn’t you literally have drooled at the chance to crash the market and create another Great Depression? With or without China’s help, the evidence speaks for itself.
That said, I pray PDT is using jujitsu now, because these lock downs, shut downs and quarantines are making a lot of MAGA supporters extremely uneasy. This is not the prudent way to react to the flu season, though possibly it’s the only way to defeat the MSM-created hysteria and new doomsday cult.
Spot on Halley; A serendipitous means to the end that the leftists had planned and lusted for under PHRC but was denied them by DJT and the Deplorables. The giddiness with which they inflame fear and destruction is testament that they see the virus as their chance to inflict the cancer that the Hillary regime had planned.
The disease is indeed a destructive pestilence like the world has never seen, partly due to the ChiCom virus, but mostly due to its weaponization by the left, in spite of -or because of- the potential for widespread and unsurvivable destruction of the Republic.
If it is, IMHO they’ve made the same mistake the Japanese did in 1941.
Effectively they put the gun to their own head an pulled the trigger.
We will recover, and quickly I would think. But they have accelerated their economic downfall immensely.
I found this tidbit about the USS Theodore Roosevelt, that nuclear aircraft carrier docked in Guam with rising numbers of covid-19 cases aboard.
Infections started cropping up after an early March port call in Vietnam, which Pentagon leaders say had about 16 known virus cases at the time.
I had wondered how the virus had gotten aboard a ship. Gotta have shore leave on a ship or the morale goes to hell. The TR has a crew compliment of around 5,000 living and working in such close quarters that civilians would be rioting. Service men and women routinely endure such conditions. That’s part of why the service has such liberal leave policies. Rats living that close together would be mauling one another. It’s just another of the sacrifices our service members make so we can sleep safely in our beds at night.
Fortunately the typical US Navy ship’s complement is quite young. Operationally they should not suffer too badly and by tour’s end they will be unlikely to infect civilians.
And it struck me that they will be better off than most. Since they operate in tropical waters the ship’s pharmacy should be well stocked with anti-malarial drugs.
I can think of three good things from (long ago) China: Lao Tzu (Tao Te Ching), Sun Tzu (Art of War), and Taijiquan.
“Neighboring” in modern warfare is a different concept than it was in the Warring States period of their history. In some ways, we are lucky that Wuhan was hit first; if that virus had been intentionally released to cause economic damage, we would be in much worse shape. We could easily have had a hundred NYCs at once, with only a panicking understanding rather than what we have now.
If the move of our economic dependence away from China had been more successful, would they have been motivated to start such a war?
Was PDJT trying to start an economic war? Was the Deep State trying to? Have the American citizenry been at war, unknowingly, with the Deep State for the last century?
These are not interesting times, these are horrifying times.
Don’t know about DJT trying to start an economic war so much as boldly delivering our answer to the war that has been waged against us by the ChiComs for decades…exactly as planned and promised as part of his 2016 platform.
There are those who believe that he has also delivered a salvo to our erstwhile domestic system of economic control in the recent machinations of the fed at his behest. I won’t presume to try to understand his methods of advanced chess, but I have seen the success of it in so many areas that I do not at this point question the purpose and benefit of essentially blending the activities of the fed into the broader control of the admin. We’ll see.
I believe that a Chinese Defense minister once said that the neighbors of China could not provide them the resources that they needed. Conquering them would be a waste of energy. He then went on to say that they desired the resources of the USA, and they did not intend to share tenancy with the Americans.
Then consider another paper by two Chinese Peoples Army officers: Unrestricted Warfare.
Much is afoot.
C … China
O … Originated
V … Virus
I … In
D … December
19 … 2019
What has occurred will eventually be known. For now we must deal with the ‘fire.’
As people speculate and information is released or discovered and released, we shall have to decide what the best paths are for all of us. There is much work to be done and many dangers beyond the Coronavirus and economic calamity to be dealt with.
That many fools and evil was involved is not a conspiracy theory.
There is serious work to be done that must not be left to fools and evil ones.
Now lets reverse the above, just think if the US Secretary of Defense and US military generals wrote papers along the line about conquering China for its resources? And “not sharing tenancy” with the Chinese?
What kind of hollering would you hear from the Libtards, DildoCrats, and UN? And yet, as described above? (chirp…..chirp……chirp…..)
