I suspect that, being a fairly sensible pragmatist, he’s hoping that all four sides (Putin, the corrupt Ukraine thugocracy, the EU thugocracy, and Biden & Co.) can somehow lose.
In short, there’s nobody on any side he wants to be seen as being associated with.

The man shown was a surviving crew member of the USS Juneau, sunk in 1942 and famously taking down the five Sullivan brothers with it. This pic was in 2006 in my last shop that I took over from friend Tommy to liquidate when he got an offer he couldn’t refuse to go back to the county Sheriff’s office he had retired from as head of CSI. This veteran, 93 at the time, randomly walked in and I asked about his hat and service as was my practice, realizing my window to interact with WWII heroes was fast closing… I can’t call his name right now but I have it somewhere, just started talking about the occurrence that controlled and defined the rest of his life, had a physical run-in with a superior the day before the ship sailed and he was grounded for the duration of the voyage which of course turned out to be its last.
Lucky man of course, and he knows it (most who survived the sinking died and/or were eaten by sharks in the week they were left floating in the open sea), but he was even after all this time, obviously in mourning, for the ship as an emblem of the nation he loved and served, and for the men, among whom he felt he belonged and should have been with when the tragedy struck.
Sorry so random, this pic just popped up in some kind of “on this date memories” thing that I did not consciously turn on and have no idea how to disable…so, six years ago, old boy is probably gone now as almost all GG’s are; he was pretty decrepit then, but driving himself and asking about ammo! Anyway, just thought I would post that and tell his story to y’all.

I sensed in the old guy a combination of confusion, appreciation, and regret, as to why he was not on that boat and also that he is not listed as a survivor, since he was not aboard as the ship, already crippled in battle, took a torpedo amidship where the prior damage was, and broke apart, sinking in seconds. He was absolutely thankful that he was not there, but terribly disappointed too.

No, I parceled out some stuff to acquaintances and the rest I will sit on.

He looks similar to many of the old veterans I knew or met growing up. The progression started with the Spanish American War vet the family knew. Then WW1 vets. Those included my step grandmother’s goof friend, who was gassed in the trenches, and my great aunt’s husband toward the end, who was awarded the Iron Cross for his actions during the trench warfare. Most of the WW2 veterans I knew are gone. There was one Marine around here who regretted that he was separated from his Marine outfit to be a cook. He said that his former unit went ashore at Iwo Jima, and were some who attacked Mount Suribachi. He regretted that he was not also with them. I have not seen him around here for a few years. He was in his 90’s back then. I have heard similar regrets from others. They all served their country. not one of those men were clowns.
To end the clown show we need fair and true elections and free speech asserted enough to have good prevail. government does not give us rights that we already have. they only wrote some of our rights down. We must assert our rights whenever we want or need to. A not asserted right is usually ignored. And then lost.
