Y’all know there’s NUTHIN’ better on a hot summer day, as a bare-faced boy, than an RC an’ a Moon Pie!!

Us northerners are more partial to Mt. Dew and Klondikes. Just saying.

Down East, it was an Iron Brew (not Irn Bru and preferably stolen straight off the truck) with a Jos Louis or Wagon Wheel

Needs one more appliance. The cooler of my youth, where bottles were plucked from the cold water. That RC bottle was a penny an ounce.

Then there were the kind that the bottles hung by the neck in tracks and the coins let you lift one out at the end after you slid it there. The one in the transient/Senior NCO barracks at my first posting was full of beer and a broke private with a length of plastic tubing and a bottle opener could have a quick gulp, if he was brave enough and fast enough, but always hit the back ones so nobody has to buy an empty bottle or three to get a full one or there WILL be an investigation and then the cooler would be padlocked with the Duty NCO holding the key and that got old fast.

Did the grave thing again this year.
    The civil war plots.
Did the white boot polish on plaques n headstones. Clean, wipe, brush out carvings. Apply wax/polish. Rub in and quick buff. Wax layer lasts and helps stop paint vandals.
Almost got trapped in the parade route detours.
    Rootbeer Floats in order today.
Got a huge age check, young girl asked me if I fought in the Civil War.
Dad facepalmed. From tats he was a snake eater. Vest in hand showed medals n ribbons. Silver n bronze star. Both with devices.
Half hour into cleaning more folks with heavy metal showed up.
I felt smaller in their presence.

Once again I had to remind someone not to wish me a Happy Memorial Day because I have knew people that died in service to their country and I was not happy about it, and explain to them that because I did not die for my country, that the day to wish me well was Veterans Day and not Memorial Day. Do they teach people anything in school or is it all BS?

Sometimes they mean well, other times they’re just ignorant of the solemnity demanded by the occasion, but when you see greeting cards for Remembrance Day, then you know society is irreparably broken. 🙁
