No, Zed, no. Not your style. I have seen what “being kept” by a woman does to a male. Poor lad, I doubt he’ll ever grow up.

Now…..if you wanted a $50K infusion to help keep the Double Dee and the DDQ afloat, that……nah, not a good idea either. Mixing loans and family is never a good idea.

You are so right about mixing loans and family isn’t a good idea

      The 300

The only reason to mix loans and family is to get rid of someone you never want to see again. Loan your worthless brother in law a thousand bucks and see if he ever returns out of fear of you asking for the money.

I wonder how long Skye will have her money before 1) spending it foolishly, 2) being fleeced out of it (see 1 above), or 3) being outright robbed of it. After all, she doesn’t strike me as the type to keep her assets (ahem) concealed and used wisely.

Wanna start a pool on it?
I say one month from today, Christmas, Skye will be back at the Double Dee, cold, broke and starving, begging Sam and Zed to take her back in.

There used to be what were called “remittance men”, who traveled around the world on regular payments from their families- on the condition that they stayed away from home. A science fictional example was Anthony Villiers in Star Well, The Thurb Revolution, and <em Masque World by Alexei Panshin.

I’m guessing Skye got the $50K on the condition that she stay on this side of the Pacific, or at least out of Japan.

Say a $50K investment in the DDQ LLC, for a reasonable representation in the membership, might work.

You know in some circles, Zed’s comment in the first panel could be interpreted as an invitation. And I’m remembering the Redhead Code of not poaching another Redhead’s Man. Blast!

$50,000.00 for Skye’s temper tantrum. Mom this will not turn out well.

You just gifted her more in a ‘ooo here dearie!’ check from mommy, than I make in a fucking year in disability. Bravo

    • November 25, 2016 at 11:54 pm

KenH, please do not take offense, but beyond your unhealthy wish for Skye’s demise, is this observation and correction:

In near forty years behind the pawn counter I lost count of the apparently able-bodied who would take a loan “until I get paid” and when I took their information gave “disability” as employment. Depending on the situation and their attitude I would sometimes comment that you don’t “get paid” for being disabled, it’s not a job, and the abuse of the Social Security system in this way is a crippling (heh) and even criminal act.

I know you are north of the border and I know the entitlement system is different there. I know there are legitimate disabilities for which the system exists, and I myself am in a glass house having decided this year as wife and I turned 62 to take SS retirement while there is still an SS.

But make no mistake. Disability is not “earned”, it is not a salary or pay, it is support paid to unproductive individuals with money taken from productive ones. Sometimes it is justified as mentioned above, especially if military service related. But most often in my experience, it is just a more polite word for welfare or the dole, and a huge contributor to the economic hole we find ourselves in, not to mention essentially a socialist redistribution scheme.

All of which is to say that disability support payments are entirely unlike Skye’s windfall, which while ill-adivised and counter-productive, is Skye’s Mom’s money to give, not money taken by legal force, and under color of law, which is what disability payments and in a different but similar way, social security old age payments.

“money taken by legal force, and under color of law, which is what disability payments and in a different but similar way, social security old age payments.”

While I’m not there yet, I’m pretty sure I’ve been having money confiscated from my pay for 30+ years that I doubt will ever come back my way in equal value.
I agree that the “disability” roles have been abused, but I think that might have a chance of changing now that someone with fiscal responsibility chops is in a position to do something about it. First up should be dealing with the increase in food stamps and welfare that occurred during “the longest sustained growth in the economy EVAH.” (yeah I know it’s BS, but that’s the line)

I’m still wondering where the $10,000,000,000,000 of increase in national debt went. That’s $22.8 million/second, for the entire 8 years spanky! And that’s JUST deficit. HFA!

The enemy progressive coffers were stuffed and continue to be by Obama’s first budget. nASA became a Muslim self empowerment program and most development was stopped. But, like Skye, they likely will have blown it all once a real budget is made again. Continuing resolution have been a path to Hell. The progressives on the government teat always depend on next years payment being there.

Forty years of any job is a long stretch, JTC. I don’t know much about the pawn business but I’ve got a feeling you got to see more than your fair share of human misery and desperation.

From what I’ve seen, I would echo the same sentiment, JTC. The Canadian social safety net is multilayered and extensive. There’s an entire subculture of folks who are born, live and die on welfare with occasional bouts of employment thrown in for variety. Sadly, these kind of entitlements crush the human spirit and undermine any sense of self-worth. Welfare is provincially administered but there are disability benefits both federally and provincially.

Employment Insurance is federal and, in many regions of the country, it is treated like a lifestyle choice… Work for as many weeks as is required to qualify for benefits and then draw benefits as long as possible. In some provinces, they hire workers seasonally. As soon as the workers are qualified for EI, then they lay off the crew… and the next week, they hire a new crew who go through the same cycle.

People don’t seem to appreciate someone, somewhere is paying for all of these programs through taxation. And then there’s the whole deficit & debt thing… with the associated costs of “servicing” the interest payments… Much like Tabasco services the cows…

We all live on the “Rez” now.

      • November 26, 2016 at 6:37 pm

We do. But not in a camp. Yet.

The decay embodied by Skye’s new BFF’s and the soul-less proles described by WayneM and me, would indicate we soon would be (that of course being the agenda of their enablers).

        Maybe now we won’t.

      • November 26, 2016 at 7:42 pm

WayneM, not that much misery and desperation really, more just a pathetic subsistence existence ironically created and perpetuated by the misguided or malguided programs that your second and third paragraphs show you understand exactly.

OT but related to your comment, an old (’08) post at the dead blog talks about the strange extremes of the pawn business and how I landed in it, for anybody that wants to subject themselves to my wordy blather and odd no-caps style of the time. The story of Gregg Dodge is extensively covered with a google search, and my contact with her in the 70’s is especially bizarre; maybe worth a followup sometime.

The only 50K+ equivalent i was ever gifted with was from my great grandmother. And that was poached by the trustee. This date was a Waterloo and Pearl event combined and is a day that has lived in infamy with me. The path not taken cost us 1.05M that was on the road offered. That was the least lost. Intentionally obscure.

My Grandmother was an heir to her Uncle’s estate and her sister, my Great Aunt, refused to sign away $13 M in California Bonds from the Uncle’s estate. The State wanted the Bonds and was waiving the Inheritance Tax which would have been more. She said it was her money and she wanted it. She died a few weeks later. Then Gran did. Trying to settle the estate was a nightmare. The State of California got it all including the land the 5 FWY runs on. Greed will ruin anyone when they feel entitled to something they never earned.

Every penny that the greedy ones in the family have now is due to my work. I built the existing structure. One said that he took it so that he could survive.

This is the short version. removed were details and I scalded a few and the Hegelian dialectic lawyers who live to remove people from their valuable assets. What? You think that $300 and hour would be enough? Not to them.

I survive on austerity levels as I have most of my life. I have lived very well in many ways for someone with no great final line on the tax return income. Personality, kindness, concern, knowledge and made luck can do a lot others would never see. If I had any sort of decent income now that I did not have to worry about, I would be dangerous. Maybe I should have worked for the military or government and gotten that pension several tried to talk me into doing. But would I still be me?

$50K, huh? Well, Tabasco does need hay and grain to stay happy and studly. And the occasional beer or lemon drops mixed with his grain won’t hurt, either. Mineral blocks are great on a date night, too.

Silly Skye! Does she know that Jill Stein is so butthurt about the election that she’s raised $5million++ to get recounts in three states, because no one was interested enough in her to vote for her? Maybe Skye could move in with Jill. She doesn’t have any job skills, though, does she?

Stein just wants the Hillary supporters/controllers money to keep some, and to stay somewhat relevant. The donation can be used in other ways than just the recount by the small print. 🙂

The old SOB has been dead for decades; unfortunately at this point so is that formerly beautiful Caribbean island and its people.

Full of American assets and infrastructure, that should have been the 51st state around 1961. I worked with some men in the mid-70’s who were heroes in that effort, who were abandoned by the POS POTUS JFK.

What a different place South Florida would be now had we decisively defeated that puppet of our mortal enemy at that time.

Some serious lessons there for our incoming CIC in facing down our current contemporary and even more dangerous threat.
