To quote the great Hans Solo, “don’t get cocky”. I remember a particular SNL episode where the new Hillary (Kate McKinnon) was visited by the old Hillary for 2008 (Amy Poehler). The old Hillary was telling the new Hillary not to get too excited, elections could take a wrong turn. The new Hillary told the old that the GOP had nominated Donald Trump. The old Hillary fell to the floor and got up saying, “I’m going to be President of the United States.” Then the ghost of Sarah Palin (Tina Fey) arrived and told them both that she had come closer to the Oval Office than either one of them. Of course, this was before election night. Kind of hard to find that clip anymore. Just don’t get cocky.

It seems like 2020 is going to go down in history for such a variety of wild & crazy things. It’s hard to imagine how much madness & fireworks will happen between now and the election.

Although I’m not certain it’s real, there’s supposed to be an ancient Chinese curse to the effect of “May you live in interesting times!”

Most people don’t know the whole curse. “May you live in interesting times, and attract the attention of important and influential people.”

Which in China usually meant being beheaded by their bodyguards. The bow is a symbolic gesture of submission, exposing your neck to the sword. It means “My life is yours to take if it pleases you to do so.”

Post-modernists like to swoon over the fact that at its peak in the 3rd Century AD, Pekin (Beijing) had a slightly larger population than Rome.

They overlook the fact that unlike Beijing, where if you didn’t bow quickly and deeply enough to a “superior” your head would be off on the spot, a Roman citizen bowed to no one.

And oh yes, in Beijing there was a very distinct hierarchy. Ethnic Chinese first, everybody else dead last. In Rome, if you were a citizen of the Empire and spoke understandable Latin, nobody gave much of a damn where you came from or what you looked like.

Or what God you worshiped. In Beijing, you’d damned well better worship those above you in the pecking order, on up to the Celestial Emperor himself. Or else.

On the whole, being like Rome is better than being like China.

Progressives love China and wish Rome had never existed. I can’t imagine why.

“Progressives love China and wish Rome had never existed. I can’t imagine why.”
Because they, each and every one, imagine themselves on the top of the pecking order. They do not understand/know the attrition rate of those trying for the job.

They also don’t get that Emperors who looked too closely at the ledgers tended to die suddenly, due to being poisoned by the eunuchs and mandarins who actually ran everything.

The high attrition rate of Pharaohs in Egypt makes me tend to think the priests there were running the same kind of scam. As long as the Pharaoh was worrying about his grand tomb for his afterlife, everybody lower in the chain of command was happy.

If he got too interested in exactly where all the money the priests were spending went, he’d suddenly need that tomb, well ahead of schedule.

Yes, much earlier than expected. Maybe out of desperation (“impeachment” fiasco + Bidementia/Sandernista fiasco + impending Deep State indictments + roaring Trump economy)? In any case, this type of election fraud scheme is Super Big League, and it will be up to PDT, “god-man” or not, to once again prove he can outsmart them against the worst of odds. They’re certainly watching with great interest from Mount Olympus…

this is not likely to extend to the point that it’s a major factor.

WRONG! It’s already a major factor we just don’t see the effects YET!! A lot of people aren’t going to work – either because they’re afraid of exposure or the bosses are. Fast food places are closing their lobbies to dine-in and either doing business exclusively via the drive-through or that and carry-out. When I came home last evening the free was a WHOLE LOT less busy than usual. The rush on toilet tissue and bottled water seems to be backing off but now Dr’s offices are shutting down. I HAD an appointment this morning at the V.A.but they called yesterday to tell me all non-essential office visits have been cancelled. My wife drives a school bus. LAST week was spring break but it was extended to this week and now the school districts are saying that school will be out until THE SIXTH OF APRIL! Whole lot of working parents are suddenly having to either make alternate daycare arrangements (assuming they can find a place that’s still open) or simply stay home! Nobody knows what the effects of this hysteria will be or for HOW LONG! The poxy bastards who started the hype may well have pulled the wrong block and started TEOTWAWKI! One can only hope that Soros, Mikey, and company are no more prepared than most folks. At least there’d be a measure of poetic justice in karma biting them in the ass.

Indeed. They both are appalling and don’t even have glittery facade of Obama. Therefore either:
    A. It’s still a circus. They will be upstaged by fake “dark horse” at the last moment. The “winner” may simply bow out with health issues without losing face. Or
    B. It’s for real. The Inner Party will be left out to dry a little bit until it’s less full of obvious basket cases, while “post-partisan” puppeteers focus on (formerly?) Outer Party. Perhaps to the point where the system leans toward shell game rather than Inner Party/Outer Party circles again.

      Hoist by their own petard.
The Wuhan virus was created in the Wuhan bio-weapons lab only a few hundred meters from that exotic meat market they blame. As I have said, whether the release was accidental or deliberate is immaterial, they shouldn’t have been playing with that fire in the first place.
The economic fallout for China might well crush the CCP. We are decoupling from China soonest and they don’t have any other market to turn to. It’s been said the hold the CCP has on the Chinese populace depends on continued prosperity and it looks like China is headed for an out-and-out depression.
My only fear is that Beijing has already installed Big Brother and there is no hope for the Chinese people.

America’s conservative polemicist and godfather of the 20th century conservative movement, Russell Kirk, identified and traced the ideals of influences of conservatism to the five cities: Jerusalem, Athens, Rome, London, and Philadelphia.

“In The Roots of American Order, first published in 1974, Russell Kirk provides a convincing answer: America is not only the land of the free and the home of the brave but a place of ordered liberty, which made its freedom and prosperity possible. Using the device of examining five cities—Jerusalem, Athens, Rome, London, and Philadelphia—Kirk traces the roots of American order to long-standing traditions in human history.”

I am struck by the similarities to the old testament judges in the book of Judges. They all had character flaws. Look at Sampson. Dumb, trusting and a womanizer.
The strangest attribute of Trump is what seems like humble arrogance. Rich, but a man of common touch. One who plans for the long haul, but able to turn on a dime.

Before the 2016 election I was sure we were doomed to be Venezuela part 2. I was sure the republic was dying. So I agree that Trump seems sent by God. I knew he wasn’t the corrupt hilary, so voting for him was easy, but his policies have been better than I could have hoped.

Remember He doesn’t promise easy, or that we can skip across the swamp on lily pads. Sometimes He calls us to go through the swamp.
