I was born and raised in California. Grew up in the gold rush country there when Ronald Reagan was governor, then raised a family and spent most of my adult life there. November a year ago, we upped stakes and headed for Texas, smiling as Kalifornia disappeared in the mirror. On board the U-Haul were all my home built AR’s and 30 round STANDARD capacity magazines.
Wife and I now reside in the DFW area as do our three adult kids.

My lineage goes back aways here—

PC, as you know, it happens everywhere there’s an urbanized area to escape. Urbanites leave the city but want the city life transplanted to the new environs. NO ONE should be allowed to vote on local issues or hold local office unless they’ve BEEN a “local” for 5 years.

Amen. Although I was born in Houston, I lived in Californica for about twenty years (left twenty-eight years ago), moving to Oregon first (too many old hippies running things there) and have been settled in Montana for the past five years. When I bother to vote, I check with the _real_ locals first to see how they feel about things. Most of them are pretty conservative, so our views are similar on most issues affecting our state.

Agreed. My wife and I fled the SF Bay Area in 2003, and we moved to Klamath County, east of the Cascades. A lot of not-so-rich ex-Californians have moved there, and we’re the shopping hub for a lot of people who’d rather be citizens of Jefferson rather than subjects of California. Well, we’d be happier in Jefferson, too.

Build the wall along the spine of the Cascades and we’d be pretty well set. Go down the line of the Hayward Fault and The State Formerly Known as California would all right, too–they’ll have to figure out what to do to with Sacramento.

Mom and Dad, God love em in Heaven, lived out there after WW II. I was born and raised a child of the 50’s, in Alameda Co., Pleasanton. Beautiful country, great people, it was great, back then, in 1965. But the family lived back East, so when Dad retired from the VA, (in Livermore, near the Rad Lab ) We moved… To what became the People’s Dem.Rep. of Md.so here I am, unable to relocate to the Free West, or F.A. as they called it in “Red Dawn”, but I look at what Pat Brown started, and his son Moonbeam finished, I get a low, burning anger in my gut, go reload more rounds, and take some comfort in having taught my son’s the evils of Socialism, the lies, and to not be fooled by the fools on the news.
If I get lucky and hit the lottery, don’t hold where I’m coming from against me. I just wanna go Home. To America….

Ann Richards, early/mid-1990s. That’s when it started. She vetoed the concealed carry handgun bill that went to her desk. That was a small thing. She also promised that the proceeds from the state lottery, if the bill for it passed, would all go to public education. It passed, but before doing so, with sleight of hand and back room deals, the proceeds were shifted to the general fund. (They are back to public education since 1997) It was 2003/4 before the entire state was blue. At least that’s how I remember it. Of course, we only consumed lame stream media then, so there’s no telling what the truth of the matter is.

I know I was raised a blue dog Democrat, married a Delaware (family from Connecticut) Republican, had my eyes opened to the truth and never looked back. That was 32 years ago. It took me ten years to convince my parents that the Democrat party had LEFT them. (HA pun) I never did convince my grandmother. She just decided to stop voting rather than vote for a Republican.

        PlasticMan

Wow. It looks like we just shifted money from the general fund to the public education fund. Same amount of money, not extra money. Looks like a political scam… as usual.

        Swansonic

In Illinois they did they did the same advertising with the lottery. They did keep their promise that the lottery proceeds would go to education. However, they reduced the money that the state gave to education by the same amount so they could spend more. And the kids got stiffed.

Heard an interview today with a Democratic candidate for governor saying we absolutely need to raise taxes on millionaise and the rich to help pay teachers a good wage. The problem in Illinois isn’t that the teachers aren’t paid enough – though in some districts that is a problem. The problem in Illinois is that the school districts have far too big of a bureaucracy sucking the money away from the classroom and then dumping a mostly worthless curriculum on the kids.

The education unions and public sector unions need to be removed….

        Old Codger

Ah, “Miss Ann”. I remember her well – not fondly, mind you, just well. I remember how they sold the lottery as being totally earmarked for education. I really don’t think all that many were surprised when somehow the money went into the general fund instead. SOP for pols we figured.

I never understood the whole lottery thing. The idea of people lining up to give the government their hard earned money. Several times more people are killed by lightning (most who are struck survive, so I hear) every year than win lotteries. But it’s their money. They can throw it down a bottomless rat hole if they want. Me? I got better things to do with mine – like use it for tinder – at least that way I’d actually get some benefit from it.

A state lottery is at its most basic nothing but a tax on innumeracy. A regressive tax, to be sure, but since it is one of the very few voluntary ones, every one of them has my whole-hearted support.

      • April 30, 2017 at 11:35 pm

Voluntary, and paid largely by folks who otherwise don’t pay a nickel other than consumption (sales) tax.

Of course the portion that goes to gov gets pissed away, but that makes it like pretty much every other tax.

The right to vote should be dependent on the fact that you hold a non-government job, and that you have been so employed for at least 2 years.
This was the essence of what the founders intended when they made the ownership of land the test.

    • April 30, 2017 at 8:48 am
      Old Codger

Unfortunately, I doubt even Justice Scalia would have signed off on that.

You counting the military in that non-government job thing? If so, then I would take great issue with same. I stand more with Robert Heinlein in Starship Troopers: don’t become a full citizen with voting rights until after serving in the military.

The land ownership also disenfranchised most of the merchant class, unless they also had land. It wasn’t exactly the best idea.

Having a non-government job for at least two years also implies retired folks couldn’t vote. Also not exactly a great idea.

        Old Codger

Major, IIRC it wasn’t just military service that qualified one to be a citizen in ST. I thought it was giving a length of time in service to the country which qualified one to participate in governance. Actually, I rather like the notion of buying citizenship and paying for it with the dearest coin of all. IIRC anybody with the wit to want to qualify would be found a slot to earn their citizenship (and their keep for the required period) and it wasn’t limited to the armed forces. I realize that not everyone is intellectually or physically qualified for active duty military service but there are ancillary jobs which a person with what once were called “handicaps” could do to earn their citizenship.

      • April 30, 2017 at 5:08 pm
        Bill G

My memory of ST has it that when Juan Rico was talking to the recruiter Juan was told that everyone HAD to be offered a way to serve, and earn citizenship with voting rights. There was something said about ‘If a blind paraplegic wanted to serve they’d find a task, possibly counting the fuzz on a caterpillar by feel’.

The best scheme I’ve heard of so far is to alter the Constitution to elect the Senate by Tax Proxy, that is you vote with the taxes you’ve paid over the last six years. It would tend to balance out the populist tendency to rob the treasury (and maybe even the grandchildren).

What we NEED is to repeal the 17th Amendment, which took the SELECTION of Senators from the state governing body (governor, legislature, committee, etc) and gave it to ELECTION by We, the Sheeple. Which mirrors (as opposed to contrasts) the ELECTION of Representatives.
This took a balanced FedGov legislature (Senate vs House of Representatives, states vs people, can-we-afford-it? vs wants), and made it the one-sided body (corpse?) we have today.
When Senators were SELECTED, they were put on notice that they were on a very short leash, and could be recalled at any time for cause. No “term limits” needed.

I’ve been watching my beloved Colorado being turned blue by progressives fleeing from the mess they’ve made in their home states. They don’t seem to realize that leftism was the toxin that fouled their old nests, so they promptly cat thief ballots for more of the same old socialist tripe the instant they’ve registered to vote at their new Colorado address. The Western Slope and the southern regions are still predominantly red, but the heavily populated Denver/Boulder metroplex votes to inflict leftism on the rest of us via such looney luminaries as Diana DeGette and The Looper (Gov. Hickenlooper). I’ll remain a red to the end Coloradan, but I’m afraid that my tombstone will stand in the People’s Republic of Calirado rather than a free state.

What will be fun to watch is if the Trumper pushes through his tax plan which would eliminate state income tax as a Federal deduction. As many tax gurus have pointed out, the red states have been, in effect, subsidizing states like Kaliforinia and New York that have huge income tax rates.

Then all those blue state those proglibs will really feel the effect of their socialism.

Oh, and the socialists in Kalifornia want to introduce single payer healthcare in the state. Guess those morons think they are smarter than Taxachussets and ol’ Romneycare. Nope, that lunacy won’t bankrupt them.

For sure I hope the Trumper also holds the line and ensures no Federal bailout when those blue state commies finally run off all the taxpaying middle class and start looking like Puerto Rico or Venezuela.

And, yes I also love how CM draws Sam….and Jan (yum).

I had thought Trump ought to wall off the PDRK as well, but not follow the border. Turn north at the Colorado, cut west to Banning Pass, then follow the San Andreas Fault, with a cut-in for Sacrademento. We keep the Sierra Nevada, the Central Valley, and take the Redwoods, driving the socialist Californians to the sea. the wall cuts west along the Oregon border. What do all y’all think?

My apparently too opaque point upthread regarding Cali needing its own electoral college was, as many of its ex-pats have stated here, that the concentrated population of voters in the city hives are wagging the dog of real California and destroying the lives of real Californians.

That very nearly happened to America as a whole, and still could if this all-out campaign by leftists to obstruct DT’s initiatives, destroy any vestige of truth in media, and replace even more Americans with paid “voters” is allowed to continue. And if they should succeed in supplanting the EC with “popular” vote totals, it’s all over for the U.S. as it may already be for California (and some other places where it’s already too late).

Have you noticed when conservatives, and of course Trump himself, have pointed to the red/blue election map broken down into counties, that it gets scarce mention other than criticism and derision from said lefties? Here’s why:

    https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=xpzeDW8g&id=204F1E3194CA921AB17DF8D3A7EF0E1943026937&thid=OIP.xpzeDW8gx3k_neozQWrH5QEwDN&q=2016+election+red+blue+map+by+county&simid=607992939057057432&selectedIndex=4

Even Cali still has its share of red-state, red-blooded Americans; particularly note the areas of purple where they may not have the majority but it’s close and within reach. What Sam says Cali “voters” love and hate, that is not the same as what California Americans love and hate, quite the opposite. And when those Americans are fleeing to preserve their freedom and lifestyle they don’t deserve to be treated as enemy insurgents as referenced by Sam as the patchouli curtain crowd (of course there are plenty of them too with their stated or unstated socialist agenda), they are just running for their lives. Better of course would be that they could stay and re-take what is rightfully theirs and has been taken from them, and turn some of that purple back to red…but as I said it may already be too late.

It was damn near too late for the rest of us too until the cascade and its champion DJ Trump rose up to stop it. But it’s only temporarily contained, not eliminated. We can look to California for the future of us all if we become at all complacent and forget to keep up the good fight.

May God give Californians the strength to continue to fight for their freedom….and the rest of us too, for the sake of ourselves, our heirs, and our Country.

      Old Codger

Sorry, but it doesn’t look like there’s all that much of the Democratic People’s Respublik of Kalifornia which is even pink, much less red. As NYAC wrote, the Kali Supreme Kourt would stymie any attempt to make a significant change. It appears to these old eyes like you real folk in Lala Land are well and truly screwed, blued and tattooed. It might just be time for you real folks to light out for better country. Texas is mostly red. No state income tax (can you spell tarred, feathered and ridden out of town on a rail for anyone who tries to impose one?) and other advantages. I suggest you settle in San Antonio or Austin or Houston. Maybe an infusion of new, fresh, red blood wil turn those bastions of liberalism red.

      • April 30, 2017 at 8:36 pm

Well let’s maybe turn that around, OC.

Instead of high-tailing it out of Cali-Town flying the white flag, maybe send some of those surplus red-blooded types you speak of INTO the state to partner with the real people there to take that sucker back. There’s a lot going for Cali, that’s why sane and insane alike flocked there for decades.

Maybe start at the top and bottom, in the looney bin of SF and the cesspool of LA which would have the added bonus of being able to personally and literally give San Fran Nan and LA Max the heave-ho. Then start working your way to the middle, spreading Constitutional freedoms and common sense all along the way.

What, too hard? Too late? That’s no attitude to have Bucky; if we just give it up to the enemy we’ll be setting the precedent for lefty worms to eat into all other remaining bastions of America…like Texas?

(takes tongue back out of cheek) 😉

The battle for a non loony California was lost when the people succeeded in passing constitutional amendments / propositions (correct any memory lapses) that cut off the invaders from excessive public benefits and other privileges. The California Supreme Court shut the will of the people down. Then the invasion kicked up several notches as the people who hate the USA and the Mexican government kicked into high gear their encouragement and assistance of the asymmetric army that Mexico had invaded the USA with. The population replacement of the people who had elected Reagan as governor continued. Mexican citizens and others who would vote socialist (Democrat) were brought into California in large numbers. Obama was the culmination of a traitor stating that he would destroy America by fundamentally changing it, by changing the people in a racist manner. Obama’s long term replacement of the Americans with those who would not insult the prophet of Islam kicked into high gear also.
That demographic changing of the population is a violation of Mexican law, by the way.
Identifying the invaders as invaders, which they are, brings in law which states that invaders, the invaders entourages, and any children born in the invaded land never become citizens of that land.
If there is a will to enforce that, there is the legal basis.
American lives have been destroyed by the actions of the invaders. Any damage to the invaders lives to repair that damage is of no relevance as the invaders have already done more to the Americans than what will be done to them.
This is a discussion that has been censored ever since the time Senator Ted Kennedy ramrodded the Immigration Act he put through Congress after his brother died. The various plans to fundamentally change America have been working for generations. We get to see this phase. We get to change whatever parts we have the will to change. There is pain involved. There was much pain and will also be much more pain if we do not act.

An interesting concept I heard about today.
If the Blue States (e.g. NY, NJ, CA, etc.) are so concerned about their citizens suffering over the disallowing of local tax deduction from Federal taxes, why not let them allow Federal taxes to be deducted from state taxes.

Huh. Yes, the lunatics certainly run the asylum in California. But even the small percentage of relatively level-headed people in a state this size works out to around 10,000,000 or 12,000,000 people. That’s a lot to just write off – numerically there are more relatively sane people here than there are in most states; we’re just surrounded by an even greater number of fuckwits.

I’ve got bad news for the rest of you: insulating or isolating yourselves with geography is a stopgap measure at best. It might buy you a decade or two. Socialism is a particularly aggressive disease. The Democrats are completely overrun by it and you can live in denial all you want, but the Republicans are about 60% down that road as well. A good chunk of Trump’s agenda is more Karl Marx than Milton Friedman. Reliably red states like Texas and Arizona are already going purple. You can’t run from this; there’s going to be nowhere to run to. Until the so-called “conservatives” stop embracing socialism and start pushing back – meaning smaller government, not bigger or merely less growth – then it’s just a waiting game for the other side.

The Republicans’ problem isn’t the Democrats or the Mexicans or the Chinese or whatever. The Republicans’ problem stares them right in the mirror every morning. They want to fight big government with even bigger government, and then they can’t figure out how that backfires on them 100% of the time.

So I’ll hang out in California, thank you, because I’m not pointlessly running away like a little bitch. As long as you guys are busy arguing about which flavor of communism we’re going to wind up with, at least I’ll be enjoying nice weather.

Oh, and pro tip: There is no political solution. The only functioning insulators are money and power. The rules apply very differently to people with those, even in these People’s Republiks.

How very fatalistic of you. Explain, then, based on your view of things, how the Soviet Union managed to collapse in 1989, completely fall apart and with it, the dictatorship of each and every Soviet satellite state, including East Germany, and has not yet been able to revive itself.

Please, please, please do your panic-mongering! Pray continue. But while you’re at it, remember that everything has a life span and this movement fueled by hysterics and lack of spirituality in the Snowflake generation is starting to show signs of burnout.

I will quote Marshal MacLuhan here, becuase it is relevant, from The Gutenberg Galaxy: “…technology has no per se moral bent—it is a tool that profoundly shapes an individual’s and, by extension, a society’s self-conception and realization…”
      T
hroughout the book, McLuhan takes pains to reveal how communication technology (alphabetic writing, the printing press, and the electronic media) affects cognitive organization, which in turn has profound ramifications for social organization.

“…[I]f a new technology extends one or more of our senses outside us into the social world, then new ratios among all of our senses will occur in that particular culture. It is comparable to what happens when a new note is added to a melody. And when the sense ratios alter in any culture then what had appeared lucid before may suddenly become opaque, and what had been vague or opaque will become translucent.”

He wrote that in 1962, forecasting what is going on now with hysterics transcending common sense in social media and doing its damnedest to influence politics. What YOU do not acknowledge is the advantage of access to social media’s revelation that panic and terror and hysterics currently in vogue are fully displayed in social media at every opportunity, allowing the more rational souls to view them at will, as well as those whose reasoning has wavered between rational and hysterical.

Hysterics wear you out. Rational thought is more stable, more comforting. And you also don’t acknowledge that the mob violence is having precisely the opposite effect it was intended to have, thanks to the instant relay of uncensored media output, not coming from network sources.

This isn’t the 1930s, you know.

Excellent socio-political insight. It’s a problem that hasn’t been resolved, with no resolution in sight. This pure-democracy thing isn’t turning out the way it was advertised (but then what promises by the political parasite classes *do* turn out as promised?).

Don’t make the assumption that all Californians are liberal idiots. There are many here that cannot escape to Free America due to health or family obligatuions. Pray for us.

Vermont is another state overrun by liberals. It’s also happening where I am, in the southern foothills of the Adirondacks, although that doesn’t matter on the state or national level given that it’s NYC the incroachers are fleeing.
The problem I see is that liberals in the middle of the mess look around, see how bad it all has become, and head out somewhere else. But they LIKED some of the mess, and work to institute their favored mess wherever they infest.
    And so it goes…

Pamela’s been busy dealing with clearing out a house in the desert.
My state got fucked up by all the freaking liberals that wanted to get away from the bad winters back east. 38.578232 -121.493621 needs a flame thrower taken to it. The Cali gas tax was just increased to 12 cents for gas and 20 cents for diesel. Then it will be increased for inflation. There will be additional fees for vehicles and Hybrids and Electric vehicles will be taxed an additional $100.00 per year for the lost gas tax revenue. All this was done with out the approval of the Citizens of the State. The totally sucky thing is instead of using the Gas tax to fix the roads and bridges, the idgets put a line in there that they can divert the money elsewhere. Bastards. What I want to know is what will happen when only the takers are left and no one wants to pay for all the goodies.
We’ve got over a Trillion dollars in a Deficit and God knows what else.
I’d say put me in charge and I would clean the crap up and toss the idiots and shit laws out. Then balance the budget. No more freebies.
    Pardon the swearing.

      Pamela,
“Happy” moving. It’s a pain, for whatever reason you’re doing it. Had to move too-numerous times over a 20 year military career. With family/children. Never easy, never pleasant.
Let us know when (not where) you’ve “landed” safely and are settled in (semi) comfortably.
Meanwhile, “we’ll keep the light on for ya’.”

The house I’m clearing was my Sis in Laws. She died suddenly from an untreated heart condition. I have a punch list of repairs that I will be either doing or having done. To one and all, please make sure you have your affairs in order. Do not leave them undone or undecided. Your loss to loved ones will be bad enough, don’t leave them with words or deeds unsaid. Choose and choose wisely. Please.

12 different schools by the time I graduated high school. Messed up my ability to make long-term friendships, for sure.
Hard to avoid the feeling that friends are disposable.

Well, for that feeling to change, it has to start with you. I always figured friends are forever, until forced otherwise. This also has the benefit of choosing friends wisely.

Recently I have been wondering. I live in CA. Why should I or even ‘we’ as the United States hand over this state to the leftist liberals that inhabit it? Every day conservatives talk about leaving or do leave this state, and the vacuum is filled by more liberals and illegals. Why should we just hand it over? What if we just inundated the state with conservatives? What if some of us ‘took one for the team’ and moved INTO CA and flooded the state with conservatives, pushing the libs and illegals out? I know, its probably never going to happen, but I just feel like conservatives are willing to just give up instead of fight! I can’t leave the state yet, and so far I have planned on leaving when I get the chance, but lately I have been reconsidering. Why throw in the towel? Just my two cents.
