Off Topic, But Important: Chuck Yeager, first person to fly faster than the speed of sound, passed away today.

My Bro-in-Law was crew chief for the Thunderbirds at Edwards on the flight line when Yeager came out, hopped in a plane and took off. When Yeager landed he joked about taking a new plane out for a test drive and tossed back the “keys”

Cool! My Great Uncle was J. Stanley Holtoner. Fascinating man; I wish I’d had the chance to spend more time with him than I did.

Saw Yeager fly a demo in the Northrup F-22 they were trying to sell to the Air Force. He made that little bird sing, dance and do everything but serve coffee. Armed Forces Day air show at an airport on West Mesa just outside Albuquerque; spring, 1963.

Side note: closing act was Bob Hoover flying “Old Yeller.” Two of the absolute best for one admission (free to us NROTC types).

        Northrup F-22 in 1963?

        John D.Egbert

Yup. It was the single engined version of the F-5. Lost out to the F-16. Don’t know how the designation jumped seven slots. My guess is the Air Farce had multiple irons in the fire at the time.

I’m pretty sure he meant the F-20 Tigershark (IIRC). It was a great plane, but it never sold.

Yes, the F-20 Tigershark, which first flew in 1982.
The Lockheed F-22 Raptor is currently in service.

        From popular Mechanics:

        Chapter 8: The Pitchman

Over the years, Yeager appeared in advertisements for everything from air conditioners and auto parts to watches and whiskey. In the early 1980s, Northrop even hired him as a pitchman for its new fighter aircraft. The Northrop F-20 Tigershark was a faster, more modern offshoot of the F-5 Freedom Fighter, and was touted as a less-expensive and ally-friendly alternative to the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle and General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon that dominated the era.

By most accounts, the Tigershark was a good aircraft, but the Air Force and Navy didn’t want it. Only three were built. The last surviving example hangs in the California Science Center.

Correction; first person to fly faster than sound, and live to tell about it.

He was also a WWII fighter ace. Spent time with the French Resistance after a forced landing. Made his way back to England and finished the war in a cockpit again. One of Those kind a guys.

Ayuh. And it was SOP for anyone contacting the Resistance to be shipped out of the Theater. But he and a bomber pilot wanted to keep fighting. Their special request chits got them all the way up to Ike. And I think he has to send it farther up the chain of command. Net result was, they kept on fighting.

Chuck Yeager RIP. I got disgusted with VA and fired them last Thursday. Coincidence? Perhaps not.

Hawaii Five-O was fiction. The reality is that Hawai’i has always been one of the most corrupt states in the Union.

Also one of the most bigoted. See “Bust a Haole Day”.

Hard to blame them really. They got screwed over much more recently than the earlier continental US inhabitants.

Besides, everything there is absurdly expense and you’re stuck nuts to butts with people. Not my idea of an idyllic getaway. Best populated place I saw on Oahu was the USMC base. Very few people on the beaches.

The new Hawaii Five-O was perhaps too close to reality. After the fifth or so time I saw the following exchange:

“This is where the informant says our suspect lives.”
        “We don’t have a warrant.”
“Listen — I think I hear someone inside crying for help!”

…I asked myself why I continued to watch this copsucking glorification of the Amerikan police state, so I stopped.

The movie The Right Stuff says it all. When Yeager is walking away from the wreckage of the crashed NF-104A.

        “Hey…is that a man?”

        “You’re damn right, it is!”

        Vaya con Dios, sir.

Asking a Democrat to think is like asking a rubber band to saw wood.

On the other hand, when PDT just the other day called for a “hero” to come forth, he had to be referring to potential Democrat whistleblowers – near the top of the food chain – daring to come clean and expose the who what where and when of the plot to steal the White House. Maybe some brave soul already has…?

No, that was God calling Yeager Home. What a man.

Wouldn’t mind joining him if the commies take over and we don’t go to war to stop them.

The discussion the other day about good men and hard men being hard/good to find? It’s a lot harder in the swamp, but there are some. Sure be good to fine one or six.

Gen. Yeager was also a fighter pilots’ pilot. Col Jack Broughton was court-martialed for violating the ROE in Vietnam when he instinctively returned fire when taking ground fire over Haiphong harbor. Turned out it was a RUSSIAN freighter shooting at him. He exposed the gun camera film to daylight, but a vindictive senior General wanted his ass for conspiracy to violate ROE. Gen. Yeager just happened to be the presiding officer of the Court. Heard the evidence, and reduced the charge to damaging government property and fined him $25.00(See Broughton’s books “Thud Ridge” and “Going Downtown”.)

I had a troll in the Basement apartment for 16 years. Everybody should have one for a period of time, teaches patience and tolerance.

Then my wife’s mother moved to Florida to live close to my wife’s sister. But I didn’t have to ban her…

It was more of a people that have no clue about how to provide medical care to patients should not tell medical professionals what medications and treatments should be used. Would you want someone with a degree in political science or gender studies deciding what drugs you got to save your life?

You mean like going Home to be with God and seeing my Mom and Dad again?

I’m good with that. And if it comes to it, I will not “submit”, no way no how so…Hello Lord!

Sure hate to leave the mess for Mybabies though.
