Not that bad of a movie, I read most of the books in my carefree youth, but all the ones saying it wasn’t likely never read any beyond a two minute skim that ruffled their pearls. They left it wide open for a sequel too…which could be something watchable rather than the ‘wokeuels’ we get nowadays.
John Carter/Barsoom books were good, but the ones that hooked me were the Tarzan series. Then there was Tom Corbett Space Cadet. That’s about when I found Heinlein, and the rest was history.
