The light pollution is so bad they have to pay a premium to escape it? Not for me, thanks! I’ll keep my rural home.

There are places in NY state like the Finger Lakes region where you would swear you were in the wilds of the 1800’s…talk about rural.

That’s how it is that so much of the state is deep red but as in other states, even Cali, the teeming cities wag the dog and give everyone there a bad name.

Maybe that can change once immigration is shut down and the commie vote-buying free shit flow is cut off, which will mean this kind of gov theft can be shut down too. Probably not, but ya gotta dream.

My Adirondack’s backpacking area. Use to be able to swim at Split Rock Falls on Rt 9 before the fencing but the ledge leap and swim area up RT 73 where the bridge crosses the Bouquet River is still usable along with a swim in Chapel Pond a little further up

Really? A “stargazing tax”? YGTBSM! How is it enforced? Collected?

It’s a fee to get into state parks after dark. You know, the state parks that the taxpayers are already paying for.

No, it’s true. The “permit” is for after hours access to the parks.
Central Park in Manhattan is full of very strange and twisted people after dark, a lot of “chicken hawks” and gay hookups. Can be a very creepy and dangerous place, the permits allow the NYPD to tell who is who.

We don’t have a “stargazing tax” in Texas but all state parks charge a “day use fee” to visit and if you wish to remain after the park closes for the day you have to pay the overnight camping fee. I don’t know about NY, but the fees cover maintenance and upkeep (including trash pickup/collection) at the parks plus consumption of utilities – water and possibly electricity – while camping.

Much of upstate NY resembles the Great Depression — farmland vacant and crumbling barns, small towns in disrepair. Years ago, while working in NYC for a few months, I drove up to Ogdensburg to view the Frederic Museum. Great collection of bronzes, paintings and photos of the vanishing wild west. Even viewed a Captain of Indian Scouts, with my name. Looks like my doppelganger, plus a walrus mustache. Outside NYC and its environs, its rather sad.

The Democrat machine in NYC controls the state, Governor Fredo Cuomo is owned by the radical environmental movement and will not allow ANY development of fossil fuels in the state. He has even banned new pipelines to bring natural gas into or through NY.

Up-State could experience a rebirth if Fracking where permitted, but Fredo says no!

NYC, Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, and a few others. Add in the disaffected and true believers scattered through the rest of the state, and de Blasio plus da Cuomo have a lock. Da Cuomo is even said to be contemplating suing the utilities that aren’t providing natural gas to desired new construction in places he won’t let them put in pipes.
I’m in the southern foothills of the Adirondacks, inside the Adirondack Park. That’s another travesty inflicted upstate by downstate.

      • February 3, 2020 at 8:26 am

FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) overrode Cuomo regarding pipelines as New York State has no power over interstate energy infrastructure. That’s FERC’s purview. But Cuomo’s delaying tactics have caused shortages and made the energy environment in New York State uncertain.

The politics of the state is driven by NYC, and it is depressing the rest of the state. In the upper areas of NY, which is where I live, even union workers are Republicans and Conservatives in the majority.
So many jobs have left because of the NY liberal policies which is killing the state. Negative growth is Cuomo’s NY.
It is a beautiful state which is being run into the ground by leftist idiots whom NYC keep voting into power.

Next will be proposed a ‘tax’ on breathing.
There is a tax at the hospital on being born, inheritance, tax for dying, a tax on food you eat, a tax on water you drink and on “sewage” that you release.
Only thing else you have to have is ‘air’.

Not to be the devil’s advocate but “taxes” on fresh water use and sewage emissions is, IMO, entirely right and proper. It costs time and money to treat any sort of water to render it potable. It also costs time and money to treat sewage so as to make it safe to release back into the environment. Do I believe that private industry could probably do the job less expensively than some government agency? Yes. But since the existing infrastructure is not organized so as to allow competing water and/or sewage utilities the point is moot. The best we can hope for is to watch these organizations closely so as to keep them as honest as practical.

There was n old porno where the Earth had run out of energy.
So the only way to generate power was through rapid frictional movement. The Government taxed a generation fee.

I’ve always thought that instead of wasting their money and energy on a gym, people who wanted exercise should dig a garden, or do all their own landscaping, or cut their own firewood, or whatever. I’ve also wondered if a gym could supplement their own energy budget by wiring their devices up to generators and energy storage modules. Alas, we seem to be going in entirely the opposite direction, with pricey devices that chew up even more wall socket power to run streaming videos of “personal trainers” cheering you on. My cardio for this week is digging up five septic tank cleanout lids, which is especially strenuous when you’re not actually sure precisely where they are located or how deep they are.

Almost got me a cardiac instead of just cardio when I had to dig mine up last month, 2 ft down and 3 ft across to access the 4 in thick 100 lb. concrete lid that had to come out to access the filter screen.

It had been several years so I decided to go ahead and have them bring the tank truck and pump the tank. Glad I did because the owner who is an old gun customer had a great idea for me.

He stood a 2 ft section of 30” corrugated culvert pipe up around the tank opening, packed the dirt back right around it and topped it with a reinforced heavy plastic lid that is sealed and locked down flush with the ground, able to be driven and mowed over, and eliminating the search and the dig and the ball busting concrete lid when the next cleaning time comes.

Best hundred bucks i’ve spent in a while.

My last pumper was wise enough to stand a loose length of PVC right over the center of most of the lids, ending an inch or two under grade, so when you start digging, you can immediately figure out if you’re in the right place. Unfortunately, I didn’t have him pump all the tanks last time, so all I had for the last tank were my measurements… and they were wrong. 🙁

Another upstate NY resident here. As pointed out it is a fee for night use of a few state parks. Mostly in the NY City and Long Island regions. Places that I really don’t like to get near.

We have 10 acres zoned rural/ag between two of the finger lakes. Both are less than 5 miles straight line from here. Ours is one of the smaller properties on the road.

Deer and turkeys in the yard are normal with the occasional fox or bear. It would be perfect if we could just get rid of the city idiots in Albany.

Found several references to a NY stargazing permit going back to 2011. Really, if it’s basically an admission fee I can’t get too upset. Every Texas state park has them.

I thought this must be a joke. I looked it up and sure enough, the state of New Yuk requires a permit for stargazing at certain public parks. So they’re charging folks for looking up in parks that they’re already paying to maintain. Really grubbing for money, aren’t they?
